Herbert Gayler
Herbert Gayler (3 December 1881 – 23 June 1917) was a British cyclist. He competed in two events at the 1912 Summer Olympics. He was killed in action during the First World War. Gayler served as a private in the London Regiment during the First World War. He took part in the Waziristan campaign against the Mahsud tribe, and was killed by sniper fire in an ambush on 23 June 1917. Gayler is commemorated at India Gate. John Gayler
John Gayler (14 April 1943 – 27 July 2022) was an Australian politician. He served in the House of Representatives from 1983 to 1993, representing the Queensland seat of Leichhardt for the Australian Labor Party (ALP). Early life Gayler was born on 14 April 1943 in Toowoomba, Queensland. He was a solicitor prior to entering politics. According to ''The Canberra Times'', he was also a former representative rugby league player and was known for "his legal work, his involvement in prisoner aid and black affairs, as well as for his continued administrative involvement in rugby league". Politics Gayler was elected to parliament at the 1983 federal election, defeating the incumbent National Party member David Thomson, a minister in the Fraser government. He was re-elected at the 1987 and 1990 elections before retiring from politics at the 1993 election. Marie Laura Violet Gayler BSc, DSc, MISI/MIM, HonMBDA (25 March 1891 – 2 August 1976) was an English Metallurgist whose most notable contributions to her field were in the areas of Aluminium alloys and dental amalgams. She spent most of her career at the National Physical Laboratory, where she, along with Miss Isabel Hadfield, were the first women to be appointed as staff in the department of metallurgy.   Early life Gayler was born in Bristol on 25 March 1891, the youngest of five daughters. Her parents were William Gayler, Director of Stamps and Excise at Somerset House and Ellen Amelia Chrismas, an artist, recipient of the Queen's Gold Medal from the Slade School in 1880 and whose work was exhibited at the Royal Academy. Noel Arthur Meredyth Gayler ( ; December 25, 1913 – July 14, 2011) was an admiral in the United States Navy, who served as the sixth Director of the National Security Agency from 1969 to 1972, and ninth Commander of Pacific Command from 1972 to 1976. Gayler was awarded three Navy Cross medals as a World War II flying ace and is credited with five aerial victories while flying for VF-2 and VF-3. Gayler was an ardent advocate for nuclear disarmament.
