It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Adelaide. Overview The House of Assembly was created in 1857, when South Australia attained self-government. The development of an elected legislature — although only men could vote — marked a significant change from the prior system, where legislative power was in the hands of the Governor and the Legislative Council, which was appointed by the Governor. In 1895, the House of Assembly granted women the right to vote and stand for election to the legislature. South Australia was the second place in the world to do so after New Zealand in 1893, and the first to allow women to stand for election. It is named after pioneer Simpson Newland, a prominent figure in nineteenth-century South Australia. The Australian Labor Party (South Australian Branch), commonly known as South Australian Labor, is the South Australian Branch of the Australian Labor Party, originally formed in 1891 as the United Labor Party of South Australia. It is one of two major parties in the bicameral Parliament of South Australia, the other being the Liberal Party of Australia (SA Division). Since the 1970 election, marking the beginning of democratic proportional representation (one vote, one value) and ending decades of pro-rural electoral malapportionment known as the Playmander, Labor have won 11 of the 15 elections. Dorothy Christine Kotz (born 3 January 1944) is a former Australian politician who was the sitting Liberal Party member for the electoral district of Newland of the South Australian House of Assembly from 1989 until her retirement in 2006. Career Kotz held many portfolios during her political career, including Minister for Employment, Training and Further Education, Minister for Youth Affairs, Minister for Correctional Services, Minister for Environment and Heritage, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Minister for Local Government, Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing, Minister for Administrative and Information Services, and has also been a Member of the Executive Council.
