Gaspar Enriquez
Gaspar Enriquez (born 1942) is an American artist known for creating portraits of people of Chicano heritage. Early life Enriquez was born in 1942 in the El Segundo Barrio neighborhood of El Paso, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at El Paso, graduating with a bachelor's degree in arts education. He then went on to attend New Mexico State University, where he studied metalwork and graduated with a master's degree. Career Enriquez work was inspired by the students at Bowie High School in El Paso, Texas, where he was a teacher. His influences included Mel Casas and Luis Jimenez, both artist from El Paso. His pieces are usually made with acrylic paint on a paper, canvas and board surface. A 2016 portrait of Rudolfo Anaya created by Enriquez is held in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Luis Jiménez (sculptor)
Luis Alfonso Jiménez Jr. (July 30, 1940 – June 13, 2006) was an American sculptor of Mexican descent. Known for portraying Hispanic-American themes, his works have been displayed at the Smithsonian and at Denver International Airport. Education Born in El Paso, Texas, he worked at his father's neon sign studio as a child. He studied art and architecture at the University of Texas in Austin and El Paso, earning a bachelor's degree in 1964. He moved to New York City in 1966 after completing his post-graduate work at Ciudad Universitaria, Mexico City, D.F. He became an accomplished artist and taught art at the University of Arizona and later the University of Houston. The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art, Culture & Industry of the Riverside Art Museum, or The Cheech, is an art museum and academic center in Riverside, California, United States. The center will focus on the presentation and study of chicano art from across the United States. It is a collaborative effort between stand-up comedian, actor, and writer Cheech Marin, who will donate his collection of more than 700 pieces of Chicano art, the City of Riverside, which will provide the facilities to house the collection, and the Riverside Art Museum, which will manage the center. Acrylic paint is a fast-drying paint made of pigment suspended in acrylic polymer emulsion and plasticizers, silicone oils, defoamers, stabilizers, or metal soaps. Mel Casas
Melesio "Mel" Casas (November 24, 1929 – November 30, 2014) was an American artist, activist, writer and teacher who is best known for his paintings that address Chicano topics. He used visual statements, his sense of humor and love of puns to "address cultural stereotypes." His work has been collected by the San Antonio Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (Bentonville, Arkansas), as well as national and international private collectors. His most important series consists of 150+ large-scale paintings called "Humanscapes" that were painted between 1965 and 1989. Bowie High School is one of the oldest operating high schools in El Paso, Texas and is part of the El Paso Independent School District. El Segundo Barrio
El Segundo Barrio (Spanish for "the Second Neighborhood", and also known as South El Paso) is a historic Hispanic neighborhood in El Paso, Texas. It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in El Paso. It was one of the main ports of entry into the United States from Mexico for many years, and became known as the "other Ellis Island" as a result. Segundo Barrio is well known for its murals and cultural character. In 2016, the area was placed on the Most Endangered Places in Texas list compiled by Preservation Texas. El Segundo Barrio shares much of its history with another southern neighborhood, Chihuahuita.
