Gary Duncan
Gary Duncan (born Eugene Duncan, Jr., adopted at birth and named Gary Ray Grubb, September 4, 1946 – June 29, 2019) was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. He was guitarist with The Brogues, then most notably with Quicksilver Messenger Service, where the complex interplay between himself and fellow-guitarist John Cipollina did much to define the unique sound of that San Francisco based band. Early life and musical career Born in San Diego, Duncan grew up in Ceres, California, where (as Gary Grubb) he played guitar for the Ratz until they finished their performance itinerary as an opening act for the Byrds and the Rolling Stones at the War Memorial Auditorium in San Jose, California. It was in 1965 when, as Gary Cole, he joined the Brogues, in Merced, California, and met future Quicksilver Messenger Service drummer Greg Elmore. It was with the Brogues that he adopted the stage name Gary Duncan. He stayed with them until they broke up in 1965. Quicksilver Messenge ...

Folk Rock
Folk rock is a hybrid music genre that combines the elements of folk and rock music, which arose in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom in the mid-1960s. In the U.S., folk rock emerged from the folk music revival. Performers such as Bob Dylan and the Byrds—several of whose members had earlier played in folk ensembles—attempted to blend the sounds of rock with their pre-existing folk repertoire, adopting the use of electric instrumentation and drums in a way previously discouraged in the U.S. folk community. The term "folk rock" was initially used in the U.S. music press in June 1965 to describe the Byrds' music. The commercial success of the Byrds' cover version of Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" and their debut album of the same name, along with Dylan's own recordings with rock instrumentation—on the albums ''Bringing It All Back Home'' (1965), ''Highway 61 Revisited'' (1965), and '' Blonde on Blonde'' (1966)—encouraged other folk acts, such as Simon & Ga ...

Solid Silver
''Solid Silver'' is the eighth album by American psychedelic rock band Quicksilver Messenger Service and their mid-1970s comeback album, reuniting the band's entire core lineup. Though the album charted slightly higher than their previous two releases, briefly denting the Top 100 on the ''Billboard'' 200, this would be the last Quicksilver album until Gary Duncan resurrected the Quicksilver name in 1986 with the album '' Peace by Piece'' and again in the 1990s with several albums. Quicksilver (album)
''Quicksilver'' is the sixth album by American psychedelic rock band Quicksilver Messenger Service. Background Released in November 1971, it was the first album without original members John Cipollina and David Freiberg. Guitar duties were entirely taken over by Gary Duncan, while Mark Ryan took over on bass. Nicky Hopkins had also left at this point to continue his successful journeyman career, replaced by Mark Naftalin; only Gary Duncan and Greg Elmore remained from the original quartet. Several tracks, including "Song For Frisco" and "The Truth", had been premiered on stage in 1970 with the earlier lineup and were already well-known to Quicksilver fans. As on the previous two albums, Dino Valenti's compositions dominate, with all but two written or arranged by him. The album saw a major decline in sales: whereas their previous four albums had reached the Top 30 on '' Billboard'', ''Quicksilver'' failed to dent the Top 100. Track listing All songs written by Dino Valenti e ...

What About Me (Quicksilver Messenger Service Album)
''What About Me'' is the fifth album by American psychedelic rock band Quicksilver Messenger Service. Released in December 1970 and recorded partly at the same sessions that produced '' Just for Love'', the album is the last to feature pianist Nicky Hopkins and the last pre-reunion effort to feature founding members David Freiberg and John Cipollina. Reception Writing for Allmusic, music critic Lindsay Planer wrote of the album "Musically, there is little to delineate the fifth long-player from Quicksilver Messenger Service, What About Me, from their previous effort, Just for Love. Not surprisingly, material for both was initiated during a prolific two-month retreat..." Track listing Side one #"What About Me" ( Jesse Oris Farrow) – 6:43 #"Local Color" (John Cipollina) – 3:00 #"Baby Baby" (Farrow) – 4:44 #"Won't Kill Me" (David Freiberg) – 2:32 #"Long Haired Lady" (Farrow) – 5:55 Side two #"Subway" (Gary Duncan, Farrow)Per BMI Records (seBMI Work # 1423776. Just For Love
''Just for Love'' is the fourth album by American psychedelic rock band Quicksilver Messenger Service. Released in August 1970, it marks the culmination of a transition from the extended, blues- and jazz-inspired improvisations of their first two albums to a more traditional rock sound. Founding member Dino Valenti, who returned to the band after a stint in prison on drug charges, was largely responsible for the new sound. Valenti's influence is readily apparent throughout; he composed eight of the album's nine tracks under the pen name Jesse Oris Farrow. Despite the marked change in the band's sound, it was their third straight album to reach the Top 30 on the Billboard charts, peaking at number 27. The only single culled from the album, "Fresh Air", became the band's biggest hit, reaching number 49. Track listing All songs written by Jesse Oris Farrow, except where noted. ;Side one #"Wolf Run (Part 1)" – 1:12 #"Just for Love (Part 1)" – 3:00 #"Cobra" (John Cipollina) ...

Happy Trails (album)
''Happy Trails'' is the second album of the American band Quicksilver Messenger Service. Most of the album was recorded from two performances at the Fillmore East and Fillmore West, although it is not clear which parts were recorded at which Fillmore. The record was released by Capitol Records in 1969 in stereo. Album content The first side of the album consists entirely of a live performance of Bo Diddley's song, " Who Do You Love?". In a self-deprecating poke at the rendition's extended length, it is listed as the "Who Do You Love Suite", with individually titled "movements" which give writing credits to the soloist on each segment. The performance of Bo Diddley's composition breaks down into a guitar solo by Gary Duncan in a style somewhere between jazz and rock (described as " Bloomfield-like") with a walking bass line by Freiberg. It then mellows down into some apparently improvised guitar and bass plucking and sliding, with feedback, handclapping and audience participation ...

Quicksilver Messenger Service (album)
''Quicksilver Messenger Service'' is the debut studio album of Quicksilver Messenger Service, released in 1968. History This was Quicksilver Messenger Service's first album, although they had already produced two songs for the soundtrack of the 1968 movie ''Revolution''. The album displays the group's jam sound amidst lighter pop-oriented songs. Unlike contemporaries such as the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver's jams were highly planned as can be heard by comparing the studio versions of songs with those from bootleg live performances. Gary Duncan and John Cipollina displayed innovative duelling lead guitars, which can be seen on extended jam tracks such as "Gold and Silver". "Dino's Song" was written by Dino Valenti who was at that time in prison due to marijuana-related offenses. Track listing Side one #"Pride of Man" – 4:08 (Hamilton Camp) #"Light Your Windows" – 2:38 (Gary Duncan, David Freiberg) #"Dino's Song" – 3:08 (Dino Valenti) #"Gold and Silver" – 6:43 ...

The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people and instigated the war on terror. The first impact was that of American Airlines Flight 11.
