Garnet Valley School District
Garnet Valley School District (GVSD) is a public school district based in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, within the Greater Philadelphia area. GVSD serves the town of Chester Heights, Bethel Township and Concord Township. Founded in 1959, it is one of the youngest school districts in Pennsylvania. Garnet Valley is one of the leading school districts, competing academically and athletically amongst the top decile schools in the state. The district is run by a school board consisting of nine elected, unpaid members. In addition to the school board, the student body of Garnet Valley High School elects two student representatives for a one-year term that runs concurrent with the fiscal year. Glen Mills is an unincorporated community in Concord Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States about 27 miles west of Philadelphia. The ZIP code for Glen Mills is 19342. History The area around Glen Mills was part of the original land grant given to William Penn in 1681. George Cheyney was the first settler here, for which the nearby town of Cheyney is named. Later, this land was sold and divided. The name Glen Mills is taken from two paper mills built by the Willcox family, one in 1835 and the second in 1846. From 1864 to 1878, these mills supplied the United States government with a special, patented paper for the printing of government bonds and notes. The Glen Mills are no longer standing, but the grist mill built by Nathaniel Newlin in 1704 still stands and is a popular destination for picnickers and history buffs alike. Francis Harvey Green
Francis Harvey Green (May 19, 1861 – January 23, 1951) was an American educator, poet and lecturer. He served as Chair of English at West Chester Normal School for 30 years and as Headmaster of the Pennington School. The Francis Harvey Green Elementary School in Bethel Township, Pennsylvania, and two libraries at West Chester University were named in his honor. Early life and education Green was born in Booths Corner, Pennsylvania, on May 19, 1861, to Sharpless and Mary Booth Green. Green graduated from West Chester Normal School in 1882. He received a Masters of Arts degree from Dickinson University in 1893. Temple University honored him with a Doctor of Literature in 1909 and Juniata College with a Doctor of Laws in 1931. He did special work in English, especially Anglo-Saxon, at Amherst College (1860) and Harvard (1894–1895). Garnet Valley High School is a four-year public school in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. It is part of Garnet Valley School District. Hi-Q Garnet Valley's Delco Hi-Q team won the championship in the 2010–2011, 2011–2012, and 2013–2014 seasons, and appeared in the semifinals in the 2012–2013 season. They won the Delco Championship and proceeded to win their first national crown in 2016. Garnet Valley has appeared in the championship match 19 times since 1977, taking first place 6 times during that period. Environmental Club The GVHS Environmental Club is one of the school's many non-athletic student clubs. It has the stated goal of "provid ngstudents with opportunities to spend time outdoors while helping better the Garnet Valley community." Concord Township is a township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 17,231 at the 2010 census. It contains the unincorporated communities of Concordville and Glen Mills.
