Garnet De La Hunt
Herbert William Garnet de la Hunt (25 August 1933 – 28 April 2014) served as the Chief Scout of the Boy Scouts of South Africa, as well as the Vice-Chairman of the Africa Scout Committee, and was the first South African to be elected to the World Scout Committee, a member from 1996 to 2002 and held the post of chairman of the committee. In 1994, de la Hunt was awarded the 234th ''Bronze Wolf'', the only distinction of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, awarded by the World Scout Committee for exceptional services to world Scouting. A Chief Scout is the principal or head scout for an organization such as the military, colonial administration or expedition or a talent scout in performing, entertainment or creative arts, particularly sport. Scouts South Africa is the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) recognised Scouting, Scout association in South Africa. Scouting began in the United Kingdom in 1907 through the efforts of Robert Baden-Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell, Robert Baden-Powell and rapidly spread to South Africa, with the first Scout troops appearing in 1908. Africa Scout Committee
The Africa Scout Region is the divisional office of the World Scout Bureau of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, with satellite offices in Cape Town, South Africa, and Dakar, Senegal. The Africa Region services Scouting in Sub-Saharan Africa and neighboring islands that are recognized members of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). Currently, the region has 39 member National Scout Associations/Organizations and 11 potential members. There are about one million registered Scouts in Africa, though it is suspected that there are about twice that number in the region. Bronze Wolf
The Bronze Wolf Award is bestowed by the World Scout Committee (WSC) to acknowledge "outstanding service by an individual to the World Scout Movement". It is the highest honor that can be given a volunteer Scout leader in the world and it is the only award given by the WSC. Since the award's creation in 1935, fewer than 400 of the several millions of Scouts throughout the world have received the award. History Scouting's founder, Robert Baden-Powell, initially recognized outstanding contributions to Scouting by any Scout with the bestowal of the Silver Wolf, but although he was Chief Scout of the World, the Silver Wolf was associated with British Scouting. Order Of The Baobab
The Order of the Baobab is a South African civilian national honour, awarded to those for service in business and the economy; science, medicine, and for technological innovation; and community service. It was instituted on 6 December 2002, and is awarded annually by the President of South Africa. The order is named after the baobab tree, which was chosen as a symbol because of its endurance and tolerance, its vitality, its importance in agro-forestry systems, and its use as a meeting place in traditional African societies. Until the Order of Luthuli and the Order of Ikhamanga were established in 2004, the Order of the Baobab also covered service in the fields now covered by those orders. Abdourahmane Sow, (born March 14, 1942 in Cambérène) Minister of the Interior of Senegal under the presidency of Abdou Diouf, held the post of chair of the World Scout Committee. Colin Inglis (Scouting)
Colin James Inglis (1928-2005) served as the Chief Scout and the International Commissioner of the Boy Scouts of South Africa, and was the creator of the National Senior Scout Adventure. In 1968, Inglis, the Western Cape Divisional Commissioner at the time, called a meeting to discuss the loss of 15- and 16-year-old Scouts, which usually happened before they achieved their First Class badge. He felt that once a Scout had reached the age of 16, troop activities were no longer an adventure for them and as a result they left Scouting. He suggested that an adventure activity be held for 16-year-old Scouts who had obtained their First Class badge, which could be the height of their Scouting careers. The meeting set up a small committee to run an event late in 1969. Nkwenkwe Nkomo
Nkwenkwe Nkomo of South Africa is the group deputy chairman of Draftfcb, FCB SA, South Africa's largest marketing communication group, and chairperson of the Advertising Standards Authority (South Africa), Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) of South Africa. He also served as one of 12 elected volunteer members of the World Scout Committee, the main executive body of the World Organization of the Scout Movement.
