Garneddwen
Garneddwen (also known as Garnedd-Wen; en, white cairn) is a hamlet in the south of the county of Gwynedd, Wales. It lies in the historic county of Merionethshire/ Sir Feirionnydd, in the valley of the Afon Dulas. It consists primarily of a single row of terraced houses, built for the workers at Aberllefenni Slate Quarry. The hamlet was named after a large cairn ("carnedd" in Welsh) that was to be found in a field below the farm of the same name up to Victorian times. History Sarn Helen, a Roman road which connected the north and south parts of Roman Wales, probably ran through the hamlet. Nearby is Fronwen, built as a family home by the quarry manager Robert Hughes (1813–1882) and his wife Jane née Deakin (1822–1906). Corris Railway
The Corris Railway ( cy, Rheilffordd Corris) is a narrow gauge preserved railway based in Corris on the border between Merionethshire (now Gwynedd) and Montgomeryshire (now Powys) in Mid-Wales. The line opened in 1859 as a horse tramway, running originally from quays on the River Dyfi at Morben and Derwenlas, skirting the town of Machynlleth and then following the Dulas Valley north to Corris and on to Aberllefenni. Branches served the slate quarries at Corris Uchaf, Aberllefenni, the isolated quarries around Ratgoed and quarries along the length of the Dulas Valley. The railway closed in 1948, but a preservation society was formed in 1966, initially opening a museum; a short section of line between Corris and Maespoeth was re-opened to passengers in 2002. Corris
Corris is a village in the county of Gwynedd, Wales, about north of the town of Machynlleth. The village lies on the west bank of the Afon Dulas (which here forms the boundary with Powys), around that river's confluence with the Afon Deri. Its railway station is the headquarters and museum of the Corris Railway, a preserved narrow gauge railway. The area has a community council. The community council system replaced the former parish council system and tackles local issues, acts as a contact point between local government and residents for information and resources on various issues. Garnedd-Wen Formation
The Garnedd-Wen Formation (also known as the Garnedd-Wen Beds) is an Ordovician lithostratigraphic formation (a sequence of rock strata) in Mid Wales. The rock of the formation is a mixture of mudstones, siltstones, fine- to coarse-grained sandstones, greywackes and conglomerates. The formation extends from Dinas Mawddwy in the north-east to Tywyn in the south-west. Geography The Garnedd-Wen Formation is the upper strata of rock across a wide part of western Mid Wales. Hughes Memorial, Corris
The Hughes Memorial in Corris is a memorial obelisk commemorating Alfred W. Hughes, who served as a surgeon in the Second Boer War. Hughes died of fever in South Africa in 1900. In 2013, Professor Chris Williams of Swansea University described it as one of the most important objects in Welsh history. Alfred W. Hughes Alfred W. Hughes was born on 31 July 1861 at Fronwen, his family's house at Garneddwen, between Corris and Aberllefenni. His father, Robert (1813–1882), was the manager of the Aberllefenni Slate Quarry. He had three brothers, Llywelyn, Charles (b. 1859) and Arthur (1857–1918) who married author Molly Thomas in 1897. Hughes trained as a draper in Dolgellau for a short time, then took a job as a clerk at Aberllefenni quarry. He then trained with a local doctor and in 1882 he went to the University of Edinburgh to study medicine. In 1889, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. Mary Vivian Hughes (2 October 1866 – May 1956), usually known as Molly Hughes and published under M. V. Hughes, was a British educator and author.'Miss M. Dinas Mawddwy
Dinas Mawddwy () is a village in the community of Mawddwy in south-east Gwynedd, north Wales. It lies within the Snowdonia National Park, but just to the east of the main A470, and consequently many visitors pass the village by. Its population is roughly 600. The village marks the junction of the unclassified road to Llanuwchllyn which climbs up through the mountains to cross Bwlch y Groes at its highest point, the second highest road pass in Wales. Roman roads ( la, viae Romanae ; singular: ; meaning "Roman way") were physical infrastructure vital to the maintenance and development of the Roman state, and were built from about 300 BC through the expansion and consolidation of the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire.
