Ganea Conjecture
Ganea's conjecture is a claim in algebraic topology, now disproved. It states that : \operatorname(X \times S^n)=\operatorname(X) +1 for all n>0, where \operatorname(X) is the Lusternik–Schnirelmann category of a topological space ''X'', and ''S''''n'' is the ''n''-dimensional sphere. The inequality : \operatorname(X \times Y) \le \operatorname(X) +\operatorname(Y) holds for any pair of spaces, X and Y. Furthermore, \operatorname(S^n)=1, for any sphere S^n, n>0. Thus, the conjecture amounts to \operatorname(X \times S^n)\ge\operatorname(X) +1. The conjecture was formulated by Tudor Ganea in 1971. Many particular cases of this conjecture were proved, till finally Norio Iwase gave a counterexample in 1998. Algebraic topology is a branch of mathematics that uses tools from abstract algebra to study topological spaces. Lusternik–Schnirelmann Category
In mathematics, the Lyusternik–Schnirelmann category (or, Lusternik–Schnirelmann category, LS-category) of a topological space X is the homotopy invariant defined to be the smallest integer number k such that there is an open covering \_ of X with the property that each inclusion map U_i\hookrightarrow X is nullhomotopic. For example, if X is a sphere, this takes the value two. Sometimes a different normalization of the invariant is adopted, which is one less than the definition above. Such a normalization has been adopted in the definitive monograph by Cornea, Lupton, Oprea, and Tanré (see below). In general it is not easy to compute this invariant, which was initially introduced by Lazar Lyusternik and Lev Schnirelmann in connection with variational problems. Tudor Ganea
Tudor Ganea (October 17, 1922 –August 1971) was a Romanian-American mathematician, known for his work in algebraic topology, especially homotopy theory. Ganea left Communist Romania to settle in the United States in the early 1960s. He taught at the University of Washington. Life and work He studied mathematics at the University of Bucharest, and then started his research as a member of Simion Stoilow's seminar on complex functions. His papers from 1949–1952 were on covering spaces, topological groups, symmetric products, and the Lusternik–Schnirelmann category. During this time, he earned his candidate thesis in topology under the direction of Stoilow. Smooth Manifold
In mathematics, a differentiable manifold (also differential manifold) is a type of manifold that is locally similar enough to a vector space to allow one to apply calculus. Any manifold can be described by a collection of charts (atlas). One may then apply ideas from calculus while working within the individual charts, since each chart lies within a vector space to which the usual rules of calculus apply. ''Lecture Notes in Mathematics'' is a book series in the field of mathematics, including articles related to both research and teaching. It was established in 1964 and was edited by A. Dold, Heidelberg and B. Eckmann, Zürich. Its publisher is Springer Science+Business Media (formerly Springer-Verlag). The intent of the series is to publish not only lecture notes, but results from seminars and conferences, more quickly than the several-years-long process of publishing polished journal papers in mathematics. ''Topology'' was a peer-reviewed mathematical journal covering topology and geometry. It was established in 1962 and was published by Elsevier. The last issue of ''Topology'' appeared in 2009. Pricing dispute On 10 August 2006, after months of unsuccessful negotiations with Elsevier about the price policy of library subscriptions, the entire editorial board of the journal handed in their resignation, effective 31 December 2006. A proof is sufficient evidence or a sufficient argument for the truth of a proposition.
