Gambier Harbour is a harbour and unincorporated settlement on the east side of the southwest end of Gambier Island in the Howe Sound region of British Columbia, Canada, which is immediately northwest of Vancouver. The settlement and post office were formerly named Grace Harbour, and also Gambier Island. History Gambier Harbour (Post Office and Steamer Landing) adopted 4 October 1945 on C.3577, as labelled on BC Lands' map 2A, 1938. Form of name changed to Gambier Harbour (Post Office) 21 November 1963. Form of name changed to Gambier Harbour (community) 17 May 1979. Gambier Island
Gambier Island is an island located in Howe Sound near Vancouver, British Columbia. It is about in size and is located about north of the Horseshoe Bay community and ferry terminal in westernmost West Vancouver. A rugged and sparsely populated island, it is far quieter than its neighbour Bowen Island, which is popular with day-trippers and summer vacationers. Gambier Island is accessible only by B.C. Ferries passenger service, water taxi or other boats. There is no central road network. The island elects two trustees to the Islands Trust, an organization that unites small island communities in British Columbia to oversee development and land use. Howe Sound
Howe Sound (french: Baie (de /d')Howe, squ, Átl'ka7tsem, Nexwnéwu7ts, Txwnéwu7ts) is a roughly triangular sound, that joins a network of fjords situated immediately northwest of Vancouver, British Columbia. It was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2021. Geography Howe Sound's mouth at the Strait of Georgia is situated between West Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast. The sound is triangular, opening to the southwest into the Strait of Georgia, and extends northeast to its head at Squamish. There are several islands in the sound, three of which are large and mountainous in their own right. Union Steamship Company Of British Columbia
The Union Steamship Company of British Columbia was a pioneer firm on coastal British Columbia. It was founded in November 1889 by John Darling, a director of the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand, and nine local businessmen. The company began by offering local service on Burrard Inlet near Vancouver and later expanded to servicing the entire British Columbia coast. The Union Steamship Company was bought out by the Canadian Pacific Steamship Company in 1948. The fire in Toronto forced the Federal Maritime Department to change marine regulations regarding wooden passenger vessels, while the nature of the BC coastal fleet changed more to freight and a tug and barge operation.
