Galathea Depth
The Emden Deep, also known as the Galathea Deep or Galathea Depth, is the portion of the Philippine Trench exceeding depths in the south-western Pacific Ocean. Originally discovered by the German ship ''Emden'' in 1927, it was first explored in detail by the Danish ship ''Galathea'' in 1951 on the Galathea 2 expedition, from which the name is taken. Biological samples collected during the Danish expedition demonstrated for the first time that a wide variety of fish, amphipods, echinoderms and bacteria not only survived, but thrived at the deepest parts of the ocean. At the time of the expedition, the Philippine Trench was the deepest known part of the ocean. The first crewed descent to the Emden Deep was made by American undersea explorer Victor Vescovo and Filipino oceanographer Deo Florence Onda in March 23, 2021. Philippine Trench
The Philippine Trench (also Philippine Deep, Mindanao Trench, and Mindanao Deep) is a submarine trench to the east of the Philippines. The trench is located in the Philippine sea of the western North Pacific Ocean and continues NNW-SSE. It has a length of approximately and a width of about from the center of the Philippine island of Luzon trending southeast to the northern Maluku island of Halmahera in Indonesia. At its deepest point, the trench reaches 10,540 meters (34,580 ft or 5,760 fathoms). Immediately to the north of the Philippine Trench is the East Luzon Trench. ''Emden'' was a light cruiser built for the German Navy (''Reichsmarine'') in the early 1920s. She was the only ship of her class and was the first large warship built in Germany after the end of World War I. She was built at the ''Reichsmarinewerft'' in Wilhelmshaven; her keel was laid down in December 1921 and her completed hull was launched in January 1925. HMS ''Leith'' was a sloop of the Royal Navy that served in the Second World War. Building, commissioning and early service ''Leith'' was ordered on 1 November 1932 under the 1931 Programme. She was laid down at Devonport Dockyard on 6 February 1933, launched on 9 September 1933 and commissioned on 10 July 1934. The ''Galathea'' expeditions comprise a series of three Danish ship-based scientific research expeditions in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, carried out with material assistance from the Royal Danish Navy and, with regard to the second and third expeditions, under the auspices of the Danish Expedition Foundation. All three expeditions circumnavigated the world from west to east and followed similar routes. Victor Lance Vescovo (born 1966) is an American private equity investor, retired naval officer, space tourist and undersea explorer. He is a co-founder and managing partner of private equity company Insight Equity Holdings. Vescovo achieved the Explorers Grand Slam by reaching the North and South Poles and climbing the Seven Summits, and he then visited the deepest points of all Earth's five oceans during the Five Deeps Expedition of 2018–2019. Deo Florence L. Onda is a Filipino microbial oceanographer. He is known for being the first Filipino to descend into the Emden Deep in the Philippine Trench. Early life and education Deo Florence Onda was born in Brooke's Point, Palawan. Onda obtained his Interuniversity PhD in Oceanography from the Université Laval in Quebec City, Canada. He also had a post-doctoral fellowship at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, Germany.
