The ''gaita sanabresa'' features a single drone. The scale of this chanter is distinct from others in Spain, in A mode (Eolic) much different from the gaita alistana of Aliste in D Mode (Doric) as well as the "Gaita Mirandesa" from Portugal. In playing, the fingering is generally open, though some players use semi-closed touches. The instrument was in decline in the 20th century and nearly extinct by the 1980s, but subsequent revivals, aided in part by the Escuela de Folclore de Puebla de Sanabria has led to a new local popularity for the instrument. Bagpipes are a woodwind instrument using enclosed reeds fed from a constant reservoir of air in the form of a bag. Senabria
Sanabria (, ''A Seabra'' in the Galician language, ''Senabria'' in Leonese language) is a ''comarca'' in the northwest of the province of Zamora, western Spain. It borders Portugal to the south, Orense to the west and León to the north. It belongs to the Autonomous Region of Castilla y León. Overview The Sierra de la Cabrera Baja forms a natural boundary with Leon Province in the north, Sierra Segundera with Galicia in the west, and Sierra de la Culebra and Sierra de la Gamoneda with the Bragança District of Portugal in the south and southwest. Comarca
A ''comarca'' (, or , or ) is a traditional region or local administrative division found in Portugal, Spain and some of their former colonies, like Brazil, Nicaragua, and Panama. The term is derived from the term ''marca'', meaning a "march, mark", plus the prefix ''co''-, meaning "together, jointly". The ''comarca'' is known in Aragonese as ''redolada'' () and in Basque as ''eskualde'' (). In addition, in Galician, ''comarcas'' are also called ''bisbarras'' (). Zamora (province)
Zamora () is a province of western Spain, in the western part of the autonomous community of Castile and León. It is bordered by the provinces of Ourense, León, Valladolid, and Salamanca, and by Portugal. Aliste (shire)
Aliste is a comarca located in the west of the province of Zamora, Castile and León, Spain, bordering with Portugal in the west and in the south. It covers 193,883 hectares. Aliste is an area that has preserved a rich cultural and ethnological tradition through years of isolation. Aliste is perhaps the poorest zone within the province, the economy of this deeply rural comarca is based on cattle rearing. The origin of the name Aliste appears as ''Alesti'' in a 9th Century manuscript, referring to the trees (''alisos'') which can be seen on the banks of what is now called the Aliste River. The Aliste comarca is one of the few areas in Western Europe having a sizeable population of wild wolves living in the Sierra de la Culebra mountain range in the northwest of the comarca.
