Gainsborough Stud
Gainsborough Stud is a stud farm based in Woolton Hill, Hampshire, outside Newbury. It is owned by United Arab Emirates-based international racing operation Godolphin. It was established in 1910 to stand the racehorse Gainsborough and sold in 1981 to Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who operated it as part of his international horse breeding and racing interests, including training horses to race under his own and Godolphin's colours. On his death, Gainsborough Stud passed to Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and became part of the Darley and then the Godolphin operations. Origins Gainsborough Stud was originally called Harwood Stud, and was established at Woolton Hill near Newbury, Berkshire, in 1910 by Lady James Douglas as a home for her racehorse Gainsborough, who won the English Triple Crown in 1918. Stud Farm
A stud farm or stud in animal husbandry is an establishment for selective breeding of livestock. The word "stud" comes from the Old English ''stod'' meaning "herd of horses, place where horses are kept for breeding". Historically, documentation of the breedings that occur on a stud farm leads to the development of a stud book. Male animals made available for breeding to outside female animals are said to be "standing at stud", or at "stud service", referencing the relatively high probability that they are kept at a stud farm. The word stud is often restricted to larger domesticated (especially farm) animals, such as cattle and horses. Cadeaux Genereux
Cadeaux Genereux (22 March 1985 – 18 November 2010) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. A specialist sprinter, he came to prominence in 1988 when he won five races including the Criterion Stakes and the Diadem Stakes and was disqualified after finishing first in the Prix de l'Abbaye. After two disappointing efforts early in 1989 he established himself as the best sprinter in Europe with wins in the July Cup and the William Hill Sprint Championship. He was then retired to stud where he had considerable success as a sire of winners. Rahy
Rahy (February 18, 1985 – September 22, 2011) was a Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in England and the United States. Background Bred by Hill 'n' Dale Farms in Lexington, Rahy was a son of the very important sire Blushing Groom and out of the Eclipse Award winner and Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame mare Glorious Song. Rahy was purchased as a yearling for US$2 million by Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum and brought to race in England for the 1987 season. Racing career Out of his seven starts at ages two and three, Rahy won three races. In his most significant event, he ran second to Robert Sangster's colt Gallic League in the 1987 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse. Jonabell Farm
Jonabell Farm is an 800-acre Thoroughbred breeding farm located in Lexington, Kentucky. It was founded in 1954 by John A. Bell and his wife Jessica and sold in 2001 to Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for his Darley Stud American division. History John and Jessica Bell founded Jonabell Farm in 1946 at Hamburg Place, then relocated to Bowman Mill Road in Lexington in 1954. The farm stands on what was part of the nearly 8,000 acres granted to Abraham Bowman, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War. Keeneland racetrack was later built on the site of Bowman's plantation. The land that eventually became Jonabell Farm contains Bowman Cabin, built in 1799. The original stone water tower also still stands. Quiet American (April 29, 1986 – October 14, 2016) was an American thoroughbred racehorse foaled in Florida. He is out of the Dr. Fager mare Demure, by the Grade I winner Fappiano, son of Mr. Prospector. Purchased for $300,000 as a yearling at the 1987 Fall Fasig-Tipton Tartan Stable Dispersal Sale by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Quiet American was very lightly raced at 2 and 3 and didn't come into his own until age 4, where he won both the NYRA Mile and the San Diego Handicap. Elusive Quality (January 27, 1993 – March 14, 2018) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who was a record-setting sprinter on the racetrack and the leading sire in North America of 2004. He sired the 2004 Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones. Background Elusive Quality was bred in Kentucky by Silver Springs Stud Farm and Marie Costelloe. Shamardal (27 March 2002 – 16 April 2020) was a Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in the United Kingdom and in France and was voted the 2004 European Champion Two-Year-Old. Background Bred at Watercress Farm in Paris, Kentucky, Shamardal was sired by the 2000 European Horse of the Year, Giant's Causeway. He was out of the mare Helsinki, who had been only an average runner, but who was a full sister to Street Cry. Kris Kin
Kris Kin (5 March 2000 – 31 August 2012) was a thoroughbred race horse and active sire. He was bred in the United States but was trained in England during his racing career. In a career that lasted just over a year, from October 2002 to October 2003, he ran seven times and won three races, most notably The Derby in 2003. Kris Kin stood as a stallion in Italy, before being exported to stand in Libya, where he died in 2012. Dilshaan (foaled 22 February 1998) is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a brief racing career he won two of his four races between September 2000 and June 2001. After finishing second in a minor race on his racecourse debut he was moved up in class to record an upset victory in the Group One Racing Post Trophy in October. In the following spring he returned from absence of more than six months to establish himself as a major contender for The Derby with a win in the Dante Stakes. He ran poorly in the Derby and his racing career was subsequently ended by injury.
