Gail L. Ireland
Gail L. Ireland (November 21, 1895 – February 11, 1988) was an American attorney and politician from Denver, Colorado, who served as the Attorney General of Colorado from 1941 to 1945. He later was appointed as Colorado Water Commissioner. Ireland was also proud of his ''pro bono'' work during his law career. During the late 1930s he served as defense attorney for Joe Arridy, a mentally disabled man who had been convicted of the rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl, based on his coerced false confession, and sentenced to death. Ireland served as his counsel after he was imprisoned, seeking to overturn his conviction and sentence through appeals in the courts. Ireland petitioned the Supreme Court of Colorado, writing, "Believe me when I say that if he is gassed, it will take a long time for the state of Colorado to live down the disgrace". Ralph Lawrence Carr (December 11, 1887September 22, 1950) was an American attorney and politician who served as the 29th Governor of Colorado from 1939 to 1943. Joe Arridy
Joseph Arridy (; April 29, 1915 – January 6, 1939) was an American man who was falsely convicted and wrongfully executed for the 1936 rape and murder of Dorothy Drain, a 15-year-old girl in Pueblo, Colorado. He was manipulated by the police to make a false confession due to his mental incapacities. Arridy was mentally disabled and was 23 years old when he was executed on January 6, 1939. Many people at the time and since maintained that Arridy was innocent. A group known as Friends of Joe Arridy formed and in 2007 commissioned the first tombstone for his grave. They also supported the preparation of a petition by David A. Martinez, Denver attorney, for a state pardon to clear Arridy's name. In 2011, Arridy received a full and unconditional posthumous pardon by Colorado Governor Bill Ritter (72 years after his death). False Confession
A false confession is an admission of guilt for a crime which the individual did not commit. Although such confessions seem counterintuitive, they can be made voluntarily, perhaps to protect a third party, or induced through coercive interrogation techniques. When some degree of coercion is involved, studies have found that subjects with highly sophisticated intelligence or manipulated by their so called "friends" are more likely to make such confessions. Young people are particularly vulnerable to confessing, especially when stressed, tired, or traumatized, and have a significantly higher rate of false confessions than adults.
