Gabriele Pepe
Gabriele Pepe (7 December 1779 – 26 July 1849) was an Italian republican insurgent, active in many campaigns against royalists fighting with or alongside the Bourbon kings of Naples. He was a cousin of Guglielmo and Florestano Pepe. Born in Civitacampomarano (now Molise), by the age of 20, he had fought in defence of the Neapolitan Republic in 1799. With the fall of the republic, he escaped severe punishment because he was perceived to be ill. He would return to Naples, this time fighting for the Napoleonic armies both under Joseph Bonaparte. He was wounded, and captured by royalist troops led by Cardinal Fabrizio Ruffo, and again banished to Marseille, France. He was soon fighting with Napoleon across the continent, from Spain to Northern Italy. Later he found himself a major in the army of Joachim Murat. Guglielmo Pepe
Guglielmo Pepe (13 February 1783 – 8 August 1855) was an Italian people, Italian general and patriot. He was brother to Florestano Pepe and cousin to Gabriele Pepe. He was married to Mary Ann Coventry, a Scottish woman who was the widow of John Borthwick Gilchrist, linguist and surgeon to the East India Company. Biography Pepe was born at Squillace in Calabria. He entered the army at an early age, but in 1799 he took part in the Neapolitan Republic (1799), Neapolitan Republic, inspired by the French Revolution. While fighting against the Bourbon troops, which were led by Fabrizio Ruffo, Cardinal Ruffo, he was captured and exiled to France. The 1848 Revolutions in the Italian states, part of the wider Revolutions of 1848 in Europe, were organized revolts in the states of the Italian peninsula and Sicily, led by intellectuals and agitators who desired a liberal government. As Italian nationalists they sought to eliminate reactionary Austrian control. During this time, Italy was not a unified country, and was divided into many states, which, in Northern Italy, were ruled by the Austrian Empire. A desire to be independent from foreign rule, and the conservative leadership of the Austrians, led Italian revolutionaries to stage revolution in order to drive out the Austrians. The revolution was led by the state of the Kingdom of Sardinia. Alphonse Marie Louis de Prat de Lamartine (; 21 October 179028 February 1869), was a French author, poet, and statesman who was instrumental in the foundation of the Second Republic and the continuation of the Tricolore as the flag of France. Florestano Pepe (March 4, 1778 – April 3, 1851) was an Italian patriot. He was brother to the more famous general Guglielmo Pepe and cousin to Gabriele Pepe. Pepe was born in Squillace (Calabria) and entered the Two Sicilies army at young age. In 1799 he was amongst the defenders of the Neapolitan Republic. Defeated by the Bourbon troops under Cardinal Ruffo, he was captured and exiled to France. He fought in numerous battles of the Napoleonic Wars under Joseph Bonaparte and Joachim Murat. He was chief of staff of the Neapolitan Division of Marshal Suchet's army in the Peninsular War (1809), and took part in the Russian Campaign of 1812.
