GWR 4079 Pendennis Castle
4079 ''Pendennis Castle'' is a GWR 4073 Class steam locomotive, preserved at the Didcot Railway Centre. Operations The seventh of the first lot of 10 Castles built in 1923/24 by the Great Western Railway (GWR), No. 4079 ''Pendennis Castle'' was completed at Swindon Works on 4 March 1924. It was allocated to Old Oak Common locomotive depot. It was named after Pendennis Castle in Falmouth, Cornwall. The locomotive became famous in 1925 when the GWR lent it to the London and North Eastern Railway as part of trials against the LNER's then new A1 Pacific Class, a famous example being LNER 4472 ''Flying Scotsman''. Running from King's Cross to Grantham, and King's Cross to Doncaster, it made the ascent from King's Cross to Finsbury Park regularly in less than six minutes, a feat that the Pacifics were unable to match. The Great Western Railway (GWR) 6959 or Modified Hall Class is a class of 4-6-0 steam locomotive. They were a development by Frederick Hawksworth of Charles Collett's earlier Hall Class named after English and Welsh country houses. Background Although the GWR had been at the forefront of British locomotive development between 1900 and 1930, the 1930s saw a degree of complacency at Swindon reflected in the fact that many designs and production methods had not kept pace with developments elsewhere. This was especially true with the useful GWR 4900 Class, the design of which largely originated in the 1900s and had not fundamentally changed since the mid-1920s. Taunton railway station is a junction station on the route from London to Penzance, west of London Paddington station. It is situated in Taunton, Somerset, and is operated by Great Western Railway. St Philip's Marsh depot is a railway depot located in the St Philip's Marsh district of Bristol, England. It was established as a steam locomotive shed in 1910 but this facility closed in the 1960s. Bristol Bath Road TMD
Bristol Bath Road depot was a railway traction maintenance depot in central Bristol, England, which was in use from 1852 until 1995. History The Bristol and Exeter Railway opened workshops at Bath Road in January 1852. 35 locomotives were built in the workshops between 1859 and 1876. Part of the site was an engine shed with six tracks. It was rebuilt under the Loans and Guarantees Act (1929) in 1934 by the Great Western Railway. The site's scale meant that although the depot was to be the major repair and maintenance point for the Bristol divisional area, the shed was restricted to a steel-frame straight 8-road with northernlight roof pattern form, as opposed to the GWR standard-pattern turntable model like Old Oak Common.
