GER Class D27
The GER Class D27 was a class of 2-2-2 steam tender locomotives designed by James Holden for the Great Eastern Railway. History In 1888, Holden experimented by removing the side rods of T19 No. 721 to form a 2-2-2. In 1889 the first of a new class appeared: initially No. 740 (later 789 and 780) which had been built on a 'Locomotive and Machinery' account. This was followed by two batches of ten on the more normal 'Letter' account. in 1893. They were built with inside cylinders powered by a boiler. They were later rebuilt with and boilers. James Holden (engineer)
James Holden (26 July 1837 – 29 May 1925) was an English locomotive engineer. He is remembered mainly for the GER Classes S46, D56 and H88, "Claud Hamilton" 4-4-0, his pioneering work with fuel oil, oil fuel, and his unique GER Class A55, "Decapod". Biography James Holden was born in Whitstable, Kent on 26 July 1837.Marshall 2003 He was apprenticed to his uncle, Edward Fletcher (engineer), Edward Fletcher and, in 1865, joined the Great Western Railway, where he eventually became chief assistant to William Dean (engineer), William Dean. In 1885 he was appointed Locomotive Superintendent of the Great Eastern Railway. He held office from 1885 to 1907 and was succeeded by his son S. D. Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, represents the wheel arrangement of two leading wheels on one axle, four powered and coupled driving wheels on two axles and no trailing wheels. Stratford Works was the locomotive-building works of the Great Eastern Railway situated at Stratford, London, England. The original site of the works was located in the 'V' between the Great Eastern Main Line and the Stratford to Lea Bridge route and in the early years was also the home of Stratford Locomotive Depot. GER Class T19
The GER Class T19 was a class of steam tender locomotives designed by James Holden for the Great Eastern Railway. Some were later rebuilt with larger boilers while others were rebuilt with both larger boilers and a wheel arrangement. Unusually, both the 2-4-0 and 4-4-0 rebuilds were classified as GER Class T19 Rebuilt. All the 2-4-0s had been withdrawn by 1920 so only the 4-4-0s passed to the London and North Eastern Railway in 1923 and these became the LNER Class D13.
