GAL (cartoonist)
Gerard Alsteens (born 3 August 1940, in Auderghem) is a Belgian political cartoonist, graphic artist and painter who works under the pseudonym "GAL". which, artistically speaking, share a closer resemblance to paintings than regularly drawn cartoons. Throughout the years his work has received several prizes and awards. Biography GAL was born in 1940 in Auderghem, Brussels, together with his twin brother Edgard. At the age of twelve he won a drawing contest in the newspaper ''Het Nieuws van den Dag''. He studied painting and graphic art at the higher St. Lucas-instituut in Brussels, where he would become a teacher at a later age. In his penultimate year at Sint-Lucas Gal worked as apprentice at the Jesuit weekly magazine ''De Linie''. The next two years he was in charge of the magazine's layout. Auderghem
Auderghem (former Dutch spelling, now used in French; pronounced ) or Oudergem () is one of the 19 municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region (Belgium). Located to the southeast of the region, along the Woluwe valley and at the entrance to the Sonian Forest (French: , Dutch: ), the municipality has an environmental advantage. The Arkprijs van het Vrije Woord (Ark Prize of the Free Word) is a symbolic award created in 1951 by Herman Teirlinck and the editorial team of the ''Nieuw Vlaams Tijdschrift'' (New Flemish magazine) to counteract ideologically driven restrictions on the freedom of expression. Teirlinck wanted to spotlight those persons who actively promote the freedom of opinion. No financial reward is associated with the prize. Hoeilaart () is a municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant, Belgium. The name Hoeilaart is of Gallic-Celtic origin, coming from "Ho-Lar," meaning a high clearing in the woods. Residents are called Hoeilanders or Doenders. The municipality only comprises the town of Hoeilaart proper. On January 1, 2019, Hoeilaart had a total population of 11,325. The total area is 20.43 km² which gives a population density of 493 inhabitants per km². Hoeilaart also sometimes called "The Glass Village" because of the greenhouse grape cultivation that once took place. The official language is Dutch. Knokke-Heist (; french: Knocke-Heist) is a municipality in the Belgian province of West Flanders. Festival D'Avignon
The ''Festival d'Avignon'', or Avignon Festival, is an annual arts festival held in the French city of Avignon every summer in July in the courtyard of the Palais des Papes as well as in other locations of the city. Founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, it is the oldest existent festival in France. Alongside the official festival, the "In" one, a number of shows are presented in Avignon at the same time of the year and are known as the "Off". In 2008, some 950 shows were performed during three weeks. Zjef Vanuytsel
Jozef Guillaume Dymphna "Zjef" Vanuytsel (July 6, 1945 – December 30, 2015) was a Belgian folk music/kleinkunst singer and guitarist. He is seen as one of the Big Three of Flemish kleinkunst, along with Wannes Van de Velde and Willem Vermandere. Vanuytsel is most famous for his debut album, "De Zotte Morgen" ("The Mad Morning"), which became a bestseller and sold more than 100.000 copies. The title track "De Zotte Morgen" and the single "Houten Kop" ("Hangover", literally "Wooden Head") from the same album are his most well known songs. Apart from being a musician Vanuytsel was also an architect. Biography Vanuytsel was born in Mol, Belgium.
