G-Unit (short for Guerilla Unit) was an American Hip hop music, hip hop group formed by longtime friends and East Coast hip hop, East Coast rappers 50 Cent, Tony Yayo, and Lloyd Banks. After amassing a string of self-released mixtapes in the early 2000s, the group released their debut album ''Beg for Mercy'' in 2003, which went on to ship over four million copies in the US and was certified RIAA certification, quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). During Tony Yayo's imprisonment in 2003, the group recruited Tennessee-based rapper Young Buck as a temporary replacement and later an official member. Tony Yayo
Marvin Bernard (born March 31, 1978), better known by his stage name Tony Yayo, is an American rapper. He is best known as a member of G-Unit, a hip hop group he formed with his childhood friends 50 Cent and Lloyd Banks. Yayo released his debut and only studio album, '' Thoughts of a Predicate Felon'', in 2005, which debuted at number 2 on the ''Billboard'' 200. His stage name is derived from the 1983 film '' Scarface'', referencing the main character Tony Montana, and Yayo, the slang word for cocaine. Early life Yayo was born Marvin Bernard in Brooklyn, New York, New York City to Haitian parents, the youngest of three children. Bernard's parents divorced when he was 16. At age 15 he began selling drugs and dropped out of school in the tenth grade. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is a trade organization that represents the music recording industry in the United States. The discography of G-Unit, an American hip hop group, consists of two studio albums, two extended plays (EP), one soundtrack album, 43 mixtapes and 10 singles (including three as a featured artist). Music videos and collaborations are also included. Summer Jam (festival)
Summer Jam is the annual hip-hop fest held in East Rutherford, New Jersey and sponsored by New York-based radio station Hot 97FM. Normally held in June, the concert features the most popular acts that hip hop and R&B have to offer in a particular year. The hip-hop summer festival format was originally pioneered and popularized by San Francisco radio station KMEL with their large-scale ''Summer Jam'' concerts from 1987 through the 1990s and present day. KMEL continues to host smaller versions of the event annually. Similarly, Los Angeles station KKBT held an annual ''Summer Jam'' hip-hop concert during the 1990s after hiring KMEL's Program Director in 1993.
