Freight House
A freight house is a building owned and operated by a railroad for receiving, loading, unloading, and temporary storage of less-than-car load (LCL) freight. Having a protected area for temporary freight storage improves efficiency by allowing railroads to accommodate customers' delivery and pickup schedules without leaving boxcars idle at loading points and destinations. A typical freight house has at least one trackside door with one or more doors for trucks or wagons to load and unload on the opposite side of the building. House tracks The track adjacent to the freight house is called a house track. Boxcars are positioned on the house track with their door adjacent to the freight house door, so a portable short steel bridge can be positioned allowing wheeled vehicles to move between the freight house and boxcar while loading and unloading. The Freight House is a restaurant in downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin located close to the river front and Riverside Park. The building was a freight house built by the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway in 1880, with an addition in 1904. It was converted in 1978 into a restaurant. Freight House (Kansas City, Missouri)
The Freight House is a historic railroad building just north of Union Station in the Crossroads Arts District of Kansas City, Missouri. The renovated Freight House is now home to three award-winning restaurants: Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue, Grunauer (German and Austrian food) and Lidia's. The building is located immediately east of the Stuart Hall Building, and it is connected via pedestrian bridge to Union Station. The pedestrian bridge was added in 2003, and its main component is an 1892 railroad span that had been sitting unused on the river bluffs until it was moved to its new location. The Freight House was originally constructed in 1887. The building housed freight unloaded from the trains until merchants picked up the freight and transported it to the numerous warehouses nearby. Southern Indiana Railroad Freighthouse
The Southern Indiana Railroad Freighthouse, located in Seymour, Indiana, has since January 2008 served as the Jackson County Visitor Center, for Jackson County, Indiana. This freight house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 22, 2003. Three separate railroads once used the facilities here. Spring Street Freight House
The Spring Street Freight House is a historic freight house located at Jeffersonville, Indiana. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in May 2007, after being nominated by the Indiana Department of Transportation. It is one of the few railhouses built in the 1920s still standing. It was built by Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway (CCC & St. L RR), also known as the Big Four, around 1925. It was built Craftsman-style, and is stories high. Its foundation and walls are made of wood, and the roof is asphalt shingles. It includes a brick chimney. Paducah Freight House
The Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railway Office and Freight House, simply known as the Paducah Freight House, is a historic railroad freight depot located in the southern portion of downtown Paducah, Kentucky. In 1852 the first charter to build a railroad for Paducah was established. Lloyd Tilghman, representative of the New Orleans & Ohio Railroad, established the first seven miles of track for Paducah, connecting the town to Florence Station, Kentucky. The freight house was constructed in 1925 by the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway in hopes of future connections with other railroads, such as the Big Four Railroad. Allamuchy Freight House
The Allamuchy Freight House is located in Allamuchy Township of Warren County, New Jersey. This freight house was built in 1906 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 23, 2002, for its significance in transportation. With It was built by the Lehigh and Hudson River Railway and is the only freight house on the line still extant. The structure is located approximately 3000 feet north of the County Route 612 (Johnsonburg Road) intersection at Alphano Road. It is roughly four miles south of the intersection of County Road 519 and County Road 617. There is a historic highway marker at the entrance to the site.
