Free Jazz Festival
The Free Jazz Festival was a two-week annual music festival debuting in 1985 with performances taking place in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. It ran between 1985 and 2001 featuring Chet Baker, Hubert Laws, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, BB King, Al Green, James Brown, Etta James, Nina Simone, Chick Corea, Sarah Vaughan, Pat Metheny, Toots Thielemans, Bobby McFerrin, Sonny Rollins, Ernie Watts, Joe Pass, and McCoy Tyner and Stanley Jordan alongside Brazilian musicians Moacir Santos, Heraldo do Monte, Egberto Gismonti, Uakti, Marcio Montarroyos, Paulo Moura, and Sivuca. The festival was founded by Monique and Sylvia Gardenberg, two sisters from Rio de Janeiro new on the Brazilian music scene. They secured sponsorship from Pan Am and the tobacco company Souza Cruz, a subsidiary of British-American Tobaccos, who made "Free" cigarettes, naming the festival Free Jazz Festival. Chet Baker
Chesney Henry "Chet" Baker Jr. (December 23, 1929 – May 13, 1988) was an American jazz trumpeter and vocalist. He is known for major innovations in cool jazz that led him to be nicknamed the "Prince of Cool". Baker earned much attention and critical praise through the 1950s, particularly for albums featuring his vocals: ''Chet Baker Sings'' (1954) and '' It Could Happen to You'' (1958). Jazz historian Dave Gelly described the promise of Baker's early career as "James Dean, Sinatra, and Bix, rolled into one". His well-publicized drug habit also drove his notoriety and fame. Baker was in and out of jail frequently before enjoying a career resurgence in the late 1970s and 1980s. Stanley Jordan
Stanley Jordan (born July 31, 1959) is an American jazz guitarist noted for his playing technique, which involves tapping his fingers on the fretboard of the guitar with both hands. Music career Jordan was born in Chicago, Illinois, United States. When he was six, he started on piano, then at eleven switched to guitar. He later began playing in rock and soul bands. In 1976, he won an award at the Reno Jazz Festival. At Princeton University, he studied music theory and composition with Milton Babbitt and computer music with Paul Lansky. He also took freshman calculus with Edward Nelson. While at Princeton he played with Benny Carter and Dizzy Gillespie. In 1985, Bruce Lundvall became president of Blue Note Records and Stanley Jordan was the first person he signed. Free was Brazilian brand of cigarettes, currently owned and manufactured by Souza Cruz, a subsidiary of British American Tobacco. History The brand was launched in 1984 (one of the slogans: ''"Free-A matter of common sense"''). Nowadays, it is one of the most purchased cigarettes in Brazil and, according to the company, leader in the levels below 7 mg of tar. Sivuca
Severino Dias de Oliveira (May 26, 1930 – December 14, 2006), known professionally as Sivuca, was a Brazilian accordionist, guitarist and singer. In addition to his home state of Paraíba, Brazil, and cities Recife and Rio de Janeiro, he worked and lived in Paris, Lisbon, and New York City intermittently. He has two daughters, Wilma Da Silva and Flavia de Oliveira Barreto. He worked with Scandinavian jazz musicians in the 1980s. His most famous songs are "João e Maria" with lyrics by Chico Buarque and "Feira de Mangaio", named after the artisan markets of northeast Brazil. Paulo Moura
Paulo Moura (15 July 1932 – 12 July 2010) was a Brazilian clarinetist and saxophonist. Born in São José do Rio Preto, where his father was the maestro of a marching band and encouraged his son to train as a tailor, Paulo instead studied in the National Music School and performed with the Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra. He was the first black artist to become first clarinetist in the Municipal Theatre Orchestra. He appeared at Bossa Nova night at Carnegie Hall in 1962 with Sérgio Mendes, the two of them also featuring on Cannonball Adderley's 1962 album, ''Cannonball's Bossa Nova''. He won the Sharp Award for the most popular instrumentalist of the year in 1992. Márcio Montarroyos
Márcio Montarroyos (8 July 1948 – 12 December 2007) was a Brazilian jazz trumpet player. Starting his studies with classical piano, he later went to trumpet and jazz. In the 1970s, he traveled to the US to study at Berklee School of Music. In 1988, the Swiss TV invited Montarroyos to produce two one-hour concerts together with the German guitar player Sigi Schwab, bassist Marc Egan, percussionist Freddie Santiago and drummer Guillermo Marchena. Uakti (band)
Uakti (WAHK-chee) was a Brazilian instrumental musical group that was composed of Marco Antônio Guimarães, Artur Andrés Ribeiro, Paulo Sérgio Santos, and Décio Ramos. Uakti was known for using custom-made instruments, built by the group itself. The name The name of the group comes from a Tucano native South American legend. Uakti was a mythological being who lived on the banks of the Rio Negro. His body was full of holes, which, when the wind passed through them, produced sounds that bewitched the women of the tribe. The men hunted down Uakti and killed him. Palm trees sprouted up in the place where his body was buried, and the people used these to make flutes that made enchanting sounds like those produced by the body of Uakti.
