Free Democrats (Armenia)
Free Democrats ( hy, Ազատ դեմոկրատներ, translit=Azat demokratner) is an Armenian liberal, Pro-European political party. It was founded in 2011 by Khachatur Kokobelyan. History Some Free Democrats party members participated in the 2012 Armenian parliamentary election under the Heritage Party list. Following the election, Heritage won 5.78% of the vote. The party participated in the 2017 Armenian parliamentary election, however the party won just 0.94% of the vote, failing to win any political representation. Khachatur Kokobelyan headed the party list, while Hrant Bagratyan (former Prime Minister of Armenia and leader of the Freedom Party) was the candidate for the post of Prime Minister. Freedom Party (Armenia)
Freedom Party ( hy, Ազատություն կուսակցություն, translit=Azatut’yun kusakts’ut’yun) is an Armenian political party. It was founded on 29 May 1997 and is currently led by former Prime Minister of Armenia Hrant Bagratyan. History The Freedom Party was founded in May 1997 by Hrant Bagratyan, who served as Prime Minister of Armenia between 1993 and 1996. Bagratyan was a member of the Armenian National Congress. The party participated in the 1999 Armenian parliamentary election, winning 1.02% of the vote. The party participated in the 2012 Armenian parliamentary election under the Armenian National Congress bloc and Bagratyan was elected as the only MP from his party. On 24 December 2012, Hrant Bagratyan was nominated to participate in the 2013 Armenian presidential election during a party congress held in Yerevan. 2018 Armenian Parliamentary Election
Snap parliamentary elections were held in Armenia on 9 December 2018, as none of the parties in the National Assembly were able to put forward and then elect a candidate for Prime Minister in the two-week period following the resignation of incumbent Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on 16 October. They were the first elections after the 2018 revolution and the country's first-ever snap elections. The result was a landslide victory for Pashinyan's My Step Alliance, which received 70% of the vote and won 88 of the 132 seats in the National Assembly. An extra-parliamentary opposition is a political movement opposed to a ruling government or political party that chooses not to engage in elections. Many social movements could be categorized as an extra-parliamentary opposition. 2021 Armenian Parliamentary Election
Snap parliamentary elections were held in Armenia on 20 June 2021. The elections had initially been scheduled for 9 December 2023, but were called earlier due to a political crisis following the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War and an alleged attempted coup in February 2021. Nikol Pashinyan, who had served as Prime Minister since 2018, resigned in April 2021 and subsequently the seventh National Assembly was dissolved on 10 May. Pashinyan continued to serve as acting prime minister until the elections were held. Following the election, Pashinyan's Civil Contract party received 54% of the vote and won 71 seats, a majority in the 107-seat parliament. The opposition Armenia Alliance, finished second with 29 seats, while the I Have Honor Alliance won 7 seats. No other party or alliance surpassed the electoral threshold required to win a seat.
