Frederik Hendrikbuurt
Frederik Hendrikbuurt is a neighbourhood in the West district of Amsterdam, Netherlands and is situated between the canals Singelgracht and ''Kostverlorenvaart''. The neighbourhood, known locally by the moniker the "Fred", is centred on the Frederik Hendrikplantsoen park and was planned during the last quarter of the nineteenth century as a confluence of green space and housing meant to be stand apart from the overcrowded Jordaan district. The construction of the neighbourhood was mostly complete by the start of the Second World War (1940). In the tradition of naming high-status areas after prominent figures, the neighbourhood is named after Frederik Hendrik (1584 - 1647); Prince of Orange, Count of Nassau, governor, captain-general and admiral-general of the Dutch Republic. Following this naming convention, prominent streets of the neighbourhood are similarly named after Hendrik's family. North Holland
North Holland ( nl, Noord-Holland, ) is a province of the Netherlands in the northwestern part of the country. It is located on the North Sea, north of South Holland and Utrecht, and west of Friesland and Flevoland. In November 2019, it had a population of 2,877,909 and a total area of , of which is water. From the 9th to the 16th century, the area was an integral part of the County of Holland. During this period West Friesland was incorporated. Singelgracht
The Singelgracht () is the waterway that borders the entire Amsterdam Center and flows along the Nassaukade, Stadhouderskade and Mauritskade. Formerly the canal and the ramparts on the city side formed the outer defenses of the city. Name The name is related to the Dutch word ''omsingelen'', "to surround", and comes ultimately from Latin ''cingulum'', meaning "belt". Other Dutch towns also have ring-shaped canals named Singel. History and course After the fourth expansion of the canal ring around 1660, the outer canal – with the ramparts that formed the defenses – became the boundary of the city. Within these ramparts there were strongholds on which mills were placed. As a result, the canal had a curvy course. Jordaan
The Jordaan is a neighbourhood of the city of Amsterdam, Netherlands. It is part of the borough of Amsterdam-Centrum. The area is bordered by the Singelgracht canal and the neighbourhood of Frederik Hendrikbuurt to the west; the Prinsengracht to the east; the Brouwersgracht to the north and the Leidsegracht to the south. The former canal Rozengracht (now filled in) is the main traffic artery through the neighbourhood. Originally a working-class neighbourhood, the Jordaan has become one of the most expensive, upscale locations in the Netherlands. It is home to many art galleries, particularly for modern art, and is also dotted with speciality shops and restaurants.
