Frederic Deschênes
Frederic "Freddie" Deschênes (born January 12, 1976) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender. Juniors Deschênes started his career in the QMJHL as a member of the Granby Bisons, who were later known as the Prédateurs. As a member of the Prédateurs during the 1995-96 season, Deschênes won several awards from the CHL, including being named CHL's First Team All-Star. Deschênes also had the lowest goals against average in the QMJHL, which earned him the Jacques Plante Trophy. During the Memorial Cup tournament in 1996, Deschênes was the only goaltender to ever post two shutouts in the same tournament Professional Despite being drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in 1994, Deschênes did not see any ice time with the club. In ice hockey, the goaltender (commonly referred to as the goalie) is the player responsible for preventing the hockey puck from entering their team's net, thus preventing the opposing team from scoring. Ryan Nie
Ryan Nie (born April 15, 1985) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender. Career Nie started his professional career with the Kalamazoo Wings of the UHL, signing with the team prior to the 2006-07 season as a backup to former longtime Rochester Americans goaltender Tom Askey. While Askey saw the majority of the team's starts, it was Nie who led the team with a league-record 2.02 GAA and a .929 save percentage. Nie ended up taking over the starting duties during the postseason, leading the K-Wings to the UHL Finals and posting a 2.73 goals-against average over 19 games. Upon the completion of the season, Nie was named to the UHL All-Rookie Team The following season, Nie signed with the Johnstown Chiefs of the ECHL. The American Hockey League (AHL) is a professional ice hockey league based in the United States and Canada that serves as the primary Minor league#Ice hockey, developmental league for the National Hockey League (NHL). The Memorial Cup () is the national championship of the Canadian Hockey League, a consortium of three major junior ice hockey leagues operating in Canada and parts of the United States. Goals Against Average
Goals against average (GAA) also known as "average goals against" or "AGA" is a statistic used in field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, and water polo that is the mean of goals allowed per game by a goaltender or goalkeeper (depending on sport). GAA is analogous to a baseball pitcher's earned run average (ERA). In Japanese, the same translation (防御率) is used for both GAA and ERA, because of this. For ice hockey, the goals against average statistic is the number of goals a goaltender allows per 60 minutes of playing time. It is calculated by taking the number of goals against, multiply that by 60 (minutes) and then dividing by the number of minutes played. The modification is used by the NHL since 1965 and the IIHF since 1990. When calculating GAA, overtime goals and time on ice are included, whereas empty net and shootout goals are not. Granby Prédateurs
The Granby Prédateurs ("Predators") were a junior ice hockey team founded in 1981 after the team moved from Sorel-Tracy, Quebec, where they had been known as the Sorel Éperviers. The team had been known as the Granby Bisons, but changed their name to the Prédateurs in 1995. They played at Arena Leonard Grondin in Granby, Quebec, Canada. However, the combination of a small, aging arena and low attendance forced the team to move soon after.
