Fred Sheldon (English Footballer)
Fredrick Sheldon (born 1871) was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Stoke. Career Sheldon was born in Stoke-upon-Trent and played for Stoke St.Peter's and then joined Stoke in the Football League. He was made back up 'keeper to Ezekiel Johnston and in two seasons with the club he played in eight matches. He left in May 1898 to play for Eccleshall. Stoke-upon-Trent
Stoke-upon-Trent, commonly called Stoke is one of the six towns that along with Hanley, Burslem, Fenton, Longton and Tunstall form the city of Stoke-on-Trent, in Staffordshire, England. The town was incorporated as a municipal borough in 1874. In 1910 it became one of the six towns that federated to become the County Borough of Stoke-on-Trent and later the City of Stoke-on-Trent. Since federation in 1910 it has the seat of the city's council, though Stoke-on-Trent's city centre is usually regarded as being the nearby town of Hanley which, since federation, has been the most commercially important of the six towns. Ezekiel Johnston (1871 – 1942) was an Irish footballer who played in the Football League for Burnley and Stoke. Career Johnston was born in Belfast and played for Glentoran before joining English league side Burnley in 1893. He spent two seasons at Turf Moor failing to displace Jack Hillman as first choice 'keeper and returned to Irish football with Belfast Celtic. Eccleshall is a town and civil parish in the Stafford district, in the county of Staffordshire, England. It is located seven miles northwest of Stafford, and six miles west-southwest of Stone. Eccleshall is twinned with Sancerre in France. History According to the Domesday Book, Eccleshall in 1086 was no more than a small village of about one hundred inhabitants. The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions.
