Francisco Carle Airport
Francisco Carle Airport is a high-elevation regional airport serving Jauja, in the Junin Region of Peru, and surrounding cities such as Huancayo and Tarma. It is currently served by two scheduled airlines. The airport terminal and runways have undergone expansion to accommodate larger aircraft. Travelers to domestic and international destinations connect in Lima's Jorge Chávez International Airport. Jauja (Shawsha Wanka Quechua: Sausa, Shawsha or Shausha, formerly in Spanish Xauxa, with pronunciation of "x" as "sh") is a city and capital of Jauja Province in Peru. Jorge Chávez International Airport (Aeropuerto Internacional Jorge Chávez) is Peru's main international and domestic airport. It is located in Callao, northwest from Lima Center, the nation's capital city and from the district of Miraflores. During 2017, the airport served 22,025,704 passengers. Historically, the airport was the hub for Compañía de Aviación Faucett and Aeroperú. Now it serves as a hub for many aviation companies. Peruvian Airlines Flight 112 was a domestic scheduled passenger flight from Lima to Jauja in Peru. On 28 March 2017, the aircraft operating the flight suffered undercarriage collapse after landing, caught fire, and was burnt out. While no fatalities occurred in this accident, 39 of the 150 people on board were injured. The Ferrocarril Central Andino (FCCA; the former Ferrocarril Central del Perú) runs inland from Callao and Lima across the Andes watershed to La Oroya and Huancayo. It is the second highest railway in the world (following opening of the Qingzang railway in Tibet), with the Galera summit tunnel under Mount Meiggs at and Galera station at above sea level.
