Francesco Melanzio (1460–1526) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance period in Montefalco, Umbria. He was born in Montefalco, and said to have been, along with Bernardino di Mariotto, a pupil of Fiorenzo di Lorenzo Fiorenzo di Lorenzo ( 1440 – 1522) was an Italian painter, of the Umbrian school. Renaissance art (1350 – 1620 AD) is the painting, sculpture, and decorative arts of the period of European history known as the Renaissance, which emerged as a distinct style in Italy in about AD 1400, in parallel with developments which occurred in philosophy, literature, music, science, and technology. Montefalco
Montefalco is a historic small hill town in Umbria, Italy, with a population of 5,581 in August 2017. It has been settled since pre-Roman times, and retains many of its historic buildings. From 1446 to 1861 it was part of the Papal States. Montefalco DOC is a regulated geographical area for its wine, the reds usually including the highly localized Sagrantino grape variety. The town's museum is in a former church, which has a fresco cycle on the life of St. Francis by the Florentine artist Benozzo Gozzoli (1450–1452). History The town has been actively settled since the times of the Umbri. It has been under the successive domination of the Romans, Lombards, being called Coccorone in the Middle Ages. Bernardino Di Mariotto dello Stagno (Perugia, circa 1478 - Perugia, 1566) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance period. Biography He trained first under either Lodovico di Angelo Mattioli of Perugia or Fiorenzo di Lorenzo, and later worked in the studio of Lorenzo da San Severino the Younger and of Vittore Crivelli. He was in San Severino Marche by 1502, and after Lorenzo's death in 1503 took over his workshop. He returned to Perugia in 1522, and was active there until 1541. Fiorenzo Di Lorenzo
Fiorenzo di Lorenzo ( 1440 – 1522) was an Italian painter, of the Umbrian school. He lived and worked at Perugia, where most of his authentic works are still preserved in the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria. Fiorenzo is known from a few signed works, including the ''Madonna of the Recommended'' (1476) and a niche with lunette, two wings and predella (1487), as well as from the documentary evidence that he was decemvir of that city in 1472, in which year he entered into a contract to paint an altarpiece for the church of Santa Maria Nuova, the pentatych of the ''Madonna and Saints''. Of his birth and death and pupilage nothing is known. San Francesco, Montefalco
San Francesco is a gothic-style, former Roman Catholic church located in Montefalco, Province of Perugia, region of Umbria, Italy. The church and adjacent Franciscan convent now functions as the civic art museum. The portal of the church dates to 1585. The church and adjacent convent were constructed between 1335 and 1338. The most notable works are the fresco cycles by Benozzo Gozzoli decorating the St. Girolamo Chapel and the apse; these include ''Life of St. Francis'' (1542). Jacopo Vincioli, Giovanni di Corraduccio and Ascensidonio Spacca also decorated the lateral chapels, and the site also includes an ''Annunciation with God the Father in Glory between Angels and the Nativity'' (1503) by Pietro Vannucci, known as “Il Perugino”. Umbrian is an extinct Italic language formerly spoken by the Umbri in the ancient Italian region of Umbria. Within the Italic languages it is closely related to the Oscan group and is therefore associated with it in the group of Osco-Umbrian languages, a term generally replaced by Sabellic in modern scholarship.
