Fortuna Magdeburg
SV Fortuna Magdeburg is a German association football club from the city of Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt. History The club was founded 1 August 1911 as Magdeburger Fußball-Verein Fortuna 1911. An earlier unrelated side known as Fussball Club Fortuna Magdeburg played in the Verband Magdeburger Ballspiel-Vereine (Federation of Magdeburg Ballplay Teams) between 1901 and 1904, including an appearance in the 1903–04 league final, soon after which the club was dissolved. The new similarly named club was established in 1911 with departments for football, athletics, handball, and volleyball. The team enjoyed some limited success in local competition during the interwar period. In 1933 German football was re-organized under the Third Reich into sixteen top-flight divisions where Fortuna made single season appearances in the Gauliga Mitte in 1933–34 and 1938–39. The Verbandsliga Sachsen-Anhalt is the sixth tier of the German football league system and the highest league in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt (german: Sachsen-Anhalt). Until the introduction of the 3. Liga in 2008 it was the fifth tier of the league system, until the introduction of the Regionalligas in 1994 the fourth tier. Marcel Schmelzer (; born 22 January 1988) is a German former professional footballer who last played as a left-back for Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund, serving as captain from 2016 to 2018. He was capped by Germany at international level. A one-club man, Schmelzer spent his entire professional career at Dortmund. Club career Schmelzer was born in Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt. Horst Buhtz (21 September 1923 – 22 March 2015) was a German football manager and former football player who played as a midfielder. Club career Buhtz began his playing career at Fortuna Magdeburg where he played for the senior team aged 16, after a special permit had been obtained. After the war, Buhtz left the Soviet occupation zone and went to play for Kickers Offenbach, winning a South German championship with the team in 1949. In 1950 he was part of the Offenbach team that lost to VfB Stuttgart in the German football championship final. Between 1950 and 1952 he played for VfB Mühlburg in the Oberliga Süd, then the highest level of football in the area. In his five years in that league, Buhtz managed to score 69 goals in 143 matches. The NOFV-Oberliga Süd is the fifth tier of the German football league system in the southern states of the former East Germany.
