Fort Deseret
Fort Deseret () is a former fort located in northeastern Millard County, Utah, United States, just south of Deseret. __TOC__ Description The fort was built in 1865 during the Utah Black Hawk War to protect settlers in western Utah from the attacks of local Utes. Due to U.S. Army obligations in the Civil War, local settlers were advised to take measures to defend themselves, resulting in the construction of the fort. The 550-foot square fort had 10-foot adobe walls. It proved useful when Black Hawk appeared in 1866 at Deseret demanding cattle. The security provided by the fortification allowed a peaceful settlement to be negotiated. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 9, 1970. Millard County, Utah
Millard County ( ) is a county in the U.S. state of Utah. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 12,503. Its county seat is Fillmore, and the largest city is Delta. History The Utah Territory legislature created the county on October 4, 1851, with territory not previously covered by county creations and including some area in the future state of Nevada. It was named for the thirteenth US President Millard Fillmore, who was in office then. Fillmore was designated as the county seat. The county boundaries were altered in 1852 and again in 1854. On March 2, 1861, the US government created the Nevada Territory, which effectively de-annexed the described portion of Millard County falling in that Territorial Proclamation. The county boundary was further altered in 1862, 1866, 1888, and in 1919. In 1921 a boundary adjustment with Sevier brought Millard to its present configuration. Moyle House And Indian Tower
The Moyle House and Indian Tower is a historic residence and watchtower in Alpine, Utah, United States, that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Description The house is located at 606 East 770 North, on the northeast side of the Moyle Historical Park. The house was expanded in 1859-1860 from a c.1858 dugout house. The tower, built during 1860–1866, was built as a private fort for defense against Indians of the Black Hawk War of 1865–1868, and is the only such tower known to have been built for protection of a single household in Utah. These stone structures were built by English-born mason and Mormon, John Rowe Moyle. His son Joseph Moyle expanded the house in 1917, adding Bungalow/Craftsman elements. A dugout/food cellar also was built during c.1858–60. These three structures are included in the NRHP listing. Cove Fort
Cove Fort is a fort, unincorporated community, and historical site located in Millard County, Utah. It was founded in 1867 by Ira Hinckley (the paternal grandfather of Gordon B. Hinckley) at the request of Brigham Young. One of its distinctive features is the use of volcanic rock in the construction of the walls, rather than the wood used in many mid-19th-century western forts. This difference in construction is the reason it is one of very few forts of this period still surviving. Cove Fort is the closest named place to the western terminus of Interstate 70, resulting in Cove Fort being listed as a control city on freeway signs, though the fort itself is historical and has no permanent population. History The site for Cove Fort was selected by Brigham Young because of its location about halfway between Fillmore, then the capital of the Utah Territory, and the nearest city, Beaver.
