Florida State Road 371
State Road 371 (SR 371) runs through Tallahassee as a primarily east west route. In 2018, the Florida Legislature designated the Orange Avenue section of the roadway as C.K. Steele Memorial Highway. Its western terminus is at State Road 263/Capital Circle; it runs eastwards along Orange Avenue to Lake Bradford Road. Leaving Orange to continue eastwards as State Road 373, it turns north on Lake Bradford Road until reaching Gaines Street, then proceeds eastwards on Gaines to State Road 61/Monroe Street. State Road 371 is an important route through Florida State University, as it passes next to Doak Campbell Stadium. Charles Kenzie Steele
Charles Kenzie Steele (born February 17, 1914 in McDowell County, West Virginia; died in Tallahassee, Florida) was a preacher and a civil rights activist. He was one of the main organizers of the 1956 Tallahassee bus boycott, and a prominent member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. On March 23, 2018, Florida Governor Rick Scott signed CS/SB 382 into law, designating portions of Florida State Road 371 and Florida State Road 373 along Orange Avenue in Tallahassee as C.K. Steele Memorial Highway. Background Steele was the son of a coal miner, an only child. At a young age, he knew that he wanted to be a preacher, and he started preaching when he was 15 years old. State Road 263 (SR 263) is a north–south route that forms the western portion of Capital Circle, Tallahassee's "beltway". The route runs from State Road 363 (Woodville Highway), taking over from the hidden State Road 261 to its east. it then runs west, separating from US 319 at State Road 61/Crawfordville Highway, where SR 263 is signed from here to the northern terminus. State Road 61 (SR 61) is located in the Big Bend area of Florida, running through the state capital of Tallahassee. Throughout most of its length, SR 61 is the unsigned state route assigned to U.S. Route 319. Route description SR 61 begins at US 98 as an unsigned route, heading north on US 319, until it splits off with the highway in Crawfordville and becomes County Road 61. It turns east towards Shadeville Highway (former State Road 365), where afterwards, it runs north as Wakulla Springs Road. The main, signed portion of SR 61 begins at the Leon County line, where it continues north and eventually rejoins US 319 just south of Capital Circle.
