State Road 373 (Florida)
State Road 373 (SR 373) or C.K. Steele Memorial Highway is a east–west state highway in Tallahassee, in the northern part of the U.S. state or Florida. It travels along Orange Avenue between SR 371 and SR 61. In 2018, the Florida Legislature designated the roadway as C.K. Steele Memorial Highway in honor of late civil rights leader Charles Kenzie Steele. The highway continues eastward along Orange Avenue as County Road 373 (CR 373) until it reaches Blair Stone Road, onto which it turns and travels until reaching U.S. Route 27 (US 27; Apalachee Parkway). A spur route, SR 373A, formerly traveled south along Springhill Road ( CR 2203) to SR 267 in Wakulla County. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is a decentralized agency charged with the establishment, maintenance, and regulation of public transportation in the state of Florida. Charles Kenzie Steele
Charles Kenzie Steele (born February 17, 1914 in McDowell County, West Virginia; died in Tallahassee, Florida) was a preacher and a civil rights activist. He was one of the main organizers of the 1956 Tallahassee bus boycott, and a prominent member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. On March 23, 2018, Florida Governor Rick Scott signed CS/SB 382 into law, designating portions of Florida State Road 371 and Florida State Road 373 along Orange Avenue in Tallahassee as C.K. Steele Memorial Highway. Background Steele was the son of a coal miner, an only child. At a young age, he knew that he wanted to be a preacher, and he started preaching when he was 15 years old. Spur Route
A spur route is a short road forming a branch from a longer, more important road such as a freeway, Interstate Highway, or motorway. A bypass or beltway should not be considered a true spur route as it typically reconnects with another or the same major road. Canada In the province of Ontario, most spur routes are designated as A or B, such as Highway 17A, or 7B. U.S. Route 27 (US 27) in Florida is a north–south United States Highway. It runs from the South Florida Metropolitan Area northwest to the Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area. Florida State Road 61
State Road 61 (SR 61) is located in the Big Bend area of Florida, running through the state capital of Tallahassee. Throughout most of its length, SR 61 is the unsigned state route assigned to U.S. Route 319. Route description SR 61 begins at US 98 as an unsigned route, heading north on US 319, until it splits off with the highway in Crawfordville and becomes County Road 61. It turns east towards Shadeville Highway (former State Road 365), where afterwards, it runs north as Wakulla Springs Road. Florida State Road 371
State Road 371 (SR 371) runs through Tallahassee as a primarily east west route. In 2018, the Florida Legislature designated the Orange Avenue section of the roadway as C.K. Steele Memorial Highway. Its western terminus is at State Road 263/Capital Circle; it runs eastwards along Orange Avenue to Lake Bradford Road. Leaving Orange to continue eastwards as State Road 373, it turns north on Lake Bradford Road until reaching Gaines Street, then proceeds eastwards on Gaines to State Road 61/Monroe Street.
