Filippo Gagliardi
Filippo Gagliardi (born c. 1606, died 1659) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, active mainly in Rome. He collaborated with Filippo Lauri, Andrea Sacchi and Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione. He also helped in the renovation of San Martino ai Monti (1647–54). He contributed illustrated architectural perspectives to Ferrari's Hesperides (1646). He was a member of the Accademia di San Luca from at least 1638 and became ''principe'' in 1656–58. He was also a member of the Congregazione dei Virtuosi del Pantheon. He produced numerous architectural paintings showing grand structures in strong chiaroscuro, including a set of four in the Palazzo Rospigliosi-Pallavicini in Rome, with figure by the Genoese painter Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, and two in the Musée de Peinture e de Sculpture, Grenoble (inv. Baroque
The Baroque (, ; ) is a style of architecture, music, dance, painting, sculpture, poetry, and other arts that flourished in Europe from the early 17th century until the 1750s. In the territories of the Spanish and Portuguese empires including the Iberian Peninsula it continued, together with new styles, until the first decade of the 19th century. It followed Renaissance art and Mannerism and preceded the Rococo (in the past often referred to as "late Baroque") and Neoclassical styles. It was encouraged by the Catholic Church as a means to counter the simplicity and austerity of Protestant architecture, art, and music, though Lutheran Baroque art developed in parts of Europe as well. Filippo Lauri
Filippo Lauri (25 August 1623 - 12 December 1694) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, active mainly in Rome. ''Miracle of St Vincent Ferrer'' Born and active in Rome, his story was featured in the biographies by Baldinucci. He first studied with his father, Balthasar Lauwers (Italianized as Lauri), who was a Flemish landscape painter; and then studied with his elder brother, Francesco Lauri. Afterwards, he worked under his brother-in-law, Angelo Caroselli. Filippo's brother had been a pupil of Andrea Sacchi. In 1654 Lauri became a member of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, and later became the ''Principe'' or director of the academy. He painted along with Filippo Gagliardi a canvas depiction of ''Celebrations for Christine of Sweden at Palazzo Barberini'' (now at Palazzo Braschi), which demonstrates the exuberant pageantry common in their time. Andrea Sacchi
Andrea Sacchi (30 November 159921 June 1661) was an Italian painter of High Baroque Classicism, active in Rome. A generation of artists who shared his style of art include the painters Nicolas Poussin and Giovanni Battista Passeri, the sculptors Alessandro Algardi and François Duquesnoy, and the contemporary biographer Giovanni Bellori. Early training Sacchi was born in Rome. His father, Benedetto, was an undistinguished painter. According to the biographer Giovanni Pietro Bellori (who was also a great friend of Sacchi's), Andrea initially entered the studio of Cavalier d'Arpino. These are Bellori's words: Sacchi later entered Francesco Albani's workshop and spent most of his time in Rome where he eventually died. Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione
Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (baptized 23 March 16095 May 1664) was an Italian Baroque painter, printmaker and draftsman, of the Genoese school. He is best known now for his etchings, and as the inventor of the printmaking technique of monotyping. He was known as ''Il Grechetto'' in Italy and in France as ''Le Benédette''. Biography Castiglione was born in Genoa. The biographer of Genoese painters, Raffaele Soprani says his parents had him places in the studio of Giovanni Battista Paggi. Wittkower describes him as a "passionate student" of Anthony van Dyck, who arrived in 1621, and Peter Paul Rubens, who stayed in the city in the first decade of the 17th century and whose paintings were readily accessible there. San Martino ai Monti, officially known as Santi Silvestro e Martino ai Monti ("Saints Sylvester & Martin in the Mountains"), is a minor basilica in Rome, Italy, in the Rione Monti neighbourhood. It is located near the edge of the Parco del Colle Oppio, near the corner of Via Equizia and Viale del Monte Oppio, about five to six blocks south of Santa Maria Maggiore. Giovanni Baptista Ferrari
Giovanni Baptista (also Battista) Ferrari (1584 in Siena – 1 February 1655 in Siena), was an Italian Jesuit and professor in Rome, a botanist, and an author of illustrated botanical books and a Syriac-Latin dictionary. Linguistically highly gifted and an able scientist, at 21 years of age Ferrari knew a good deal of Hebrew and spoke and wrote excellent Greek and Latin. He became a professor of Hebrew and Rhetoric at the Jesuit College in Rome and in 1622 was editor of a Syriac-Latin dictionary (''Nomenclator Syriacus''). Accademia Di San Luca
The Accademia di San Luca (the "Academy of Saint Luke") is an Italian academy of artists in Rome. The establishment of the Accademia de i Pittori e Scultori di Roma was approved by papal brief in 1577, and in 1593 Federico Zuccari became its first ''principe'' or director; the statutes were ratified in 1607. Other founders included Girolamo Muziano and Pietro Olivieri. The Academy was named for Luke the Evangelist, the patron saint of painters. From the late sixteenth century until it moved to its present location at the Palazzo Carpegna, it was based in an urban block by the Roman Forum and although these buildings no longer survive, the Academy church of Santi Luca e Martina, does. Palazzo Rospigliosi-Pallavicini
The Palazzo Pallavicini-Rospigliosi is a palace in Rome, Italy. It was built by the Borghese family on the Quirinal Hill; its footprint occupies the site where the ruins of the baths of Constantine stood, whose remains still are part of the basement of the main building, the Casino dell'Aurora. Its first inhabitant was the famed art collector Cardinal Scipione Borghese, the nephew of Pope Paul V, who wanted to be housed near the large papal Palazzo Quirinale. The palace and garden of the Pallavicini-Rospigliosi were the product of the accumulated sites and were designed by Giovanni Vasanzio and Carlo Maderno in 1611–16. Viviano Codazzi (c. 1604 – 5 November 1670) was an Italian architectural painter who was active during the Baroque period.
