Ferdinand Wittig
Ferdinand Wittig (October 20, 1851 – April 17, 1909) was an American merchant, farmer, and politician. Born in Holby, Sjotland, Denmark, Wittig emigrated to the United States, in 1872, and settled in New Denmark, Brown County, Wisconsin. For a time he worked in the woods in northern Wisconsin and owned a farm in New Denmark. He was also in the general mercantile business and also owned a cheese factory. Wittig served as county treasurer for Brown County in 1907 and was a Republican. In 1909, Wittig served in the Wisconsin State Assembly The Wisconsin State Assembly is the lower house of the Wisconsin Legislature. Together with the smaller Wisconsin Senate, the two constitute the legislative branch of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. New Denmark, Wisconsin
New Denmark is a town in Brown County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,562 at the 2020 census. The town surrounds the village of Denmark but is separate from it. The unincorporated communities of Fontenoy and Langes Corners are located in the town. The unincorporated community of Buckman is also located partially in the town. History New Denmark was settled by Danish immigrants in 1848, making it the oldest Danish settlement in the United States. The Town of New Denmark had a post office called Cooperstown, which was later renamed "New Denmark". Cooperstown is now part of Manitowoc County. On March 8, 1855, the Brown County Board of Supervisors split New Denmark off from the town of De Pere, creating the Town of New Denmark. On June 15, 1915, the community of Denmark, the commercial center of the Town of New Denmark, held a special election on the issue of incorporation. The Wisconsin State Assembly is the lower house of the Wisconsin Legislature. Together with the smaller Wisconsin Senate, the two constitute the legislative branch of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Representatives are elected for two-year terms, elected during the fall elections. If a vacancy occurs in an Assembly seat between elections, it may be filled only by a special election. The Wisconsin Constitution limits the size of the State Assembly to between 54 and 100 members inclusive. Since 1973, the state has been divided into 99 Assembly districts apportioned amongst the state based on population as determined by the decennial census, for a total of 99 representatives. Brown County is a county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 268,740, making it the fourth-most populous county in Wisconsin. The county seat is Green Bay, making it one of three Wisconsin counties on Lake Michigan not to have a county seat with the same name.
