FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1970
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1970 took place 14–22 February 1970 in Vysoké Tatry, Czechoslovakia (present-day Slovakia). This was the second time this city hosted the event having done so in 1935. It was the first time an event was televised in colour from Czechoslovakia though broadcasting there remained in black and white. Vysoké Tatry (town)
Vysoké Tatry (; hu, Magastátra, ; german: Höhe Tatra, ; pl, Wysokie Tatry, ; cs, Vysoké Tatry, ), formally Mesto Vysoké Tatry () is a town at the feet of the Slovak part of High Tatras in Slovakia including all the major resorts in that region. It was created in 1990, and its official name from 1990 to 1999 was ''Starý Smokovec'', which is the name of one of its major settlements. Features and statistics The town of Vysoké Tatry is special in many aspects. It is not a true town, but a conglomerate of separate and different settlements (originally separate villages), whose only common feature is that they are the main tourist resorts in the Slovak High Tatras, while being connected through a common railway network (the Tatra Railway). Vyacheslav Petrovich Vedenin (russian: Вячесла́в Петро́вич Веденин; 1 October 1941 – 22 October 2021 ) was a Soviet cross-country skier. Nina Fyodorova
Nina Viktorovna Baldycheva (russian: Нина Викторовна Балдычёва; also known as Baldychova, Fedorova, Baldycheva-Fedorova or Fyodorova; 18 July 1947 – 27 January 2019) was a Russian cross-country skier who competed from 1970 to 1980. She won three medals at the Winter Olympics with a gold in the 4 × 5 km relay (1976), a silver in the 4 × 5 km relay (1980), and a bronze in the 5 km (1976). In the relay in 1976, she injured her left hand in a fall at the start, but completed the race. At the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships Fyodorova earned two gold (3 × 5 km relay: 1970, 4×5 km: 1974) and one bronze medals (5 km: 1970). Domestically she won one individual Soviet title, over 5 km in 1971, and eight relay titles (1969–73, 1975–76, 1979). Galina Kulakova
Galina Alexeyevna Kulakova (russian: Галина Алексеевна Кулакова, born 29 April 1942) is a Soviet former cross-country skier, arguably the best skier on distances shorter than 10 km in the early 1970s. She won four Olympic golds, two individual in 1972 and two relay golds in 1972 and 1976. She was the most successful athlete at the 1972 Winter Olympics, along with Ard Schenk of the Netherlands. Competing in the World Championships, she won three individual golds, two in 1974 and one in 1970, and also two relay golds in those years. Kulakova also won the 10 km event at the Holmenkollen ski festival in 1970 and 1979. Galina Kulakova was also 39 times ''Champion of the USSR'' between 1969 and 1981. Ingvar Sandström
Ingvar Sandström (born 3 September 1942) is a Swedish cross-country skier who competed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He won the 4 × 10 km relay bronze at the 1970 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Vysoké Tatry. Sandström also finished fourth in the 30 km event at the 1966 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo and competed in the 30 km event at the 1968 Winter Olympics. Jan Ivar "Janne" Halvarsson (26 December 1942 – 5 May 2020) was a Swedish cross-country skier. Career He competed at the 1968 Winter Olympics in the 15, 30, 50 and 4 × 10 km events and won a silver medal in the relay, finishing fifth in the 15 km and seventh in the 50 km. He won a bronze medal in the 4 × 10 km relay at the 1970 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. During his skiing career Halvarsson was known for his waxing skills. Therefore, after retiring he was invited to cover this area at the Swedish national team, but left after quarrels with the skiing federation. Gert-Dietmar Klause (born 25 March 1945) is a former East German cross-country skier who competed at three Olympic Games from 1968 to 1976. Axel Lesser
Axel Lesser (born 18 April 1946, in Brotterode) is a former East German cross-country skier who competed in the 1960s and 1970s. He earned a silver medal in the 4 x 10 km at the 1970 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Vysoké Tatry. Lesser finished 6th in the 15 km event at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo. He also was on the 4 x 10 km teams that finished 7th at the 1968 Winter Olympics and 6th in 1972. At the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Lesser was the second skier on the East German team that was in second place when he collided with a spectator, injured his knee, and had to abandon the race.
