Valery Tarakanov
Valery Tarakanov (russian: Вале́рий Тарака́нов; born 9 August 1941 in Yaroslavl) is a Soviet/Russian former cross-country skier who competed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He won the 4x10 km gold at the 1970 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Vysoké Tatry. Tarakanov also finished 6th in the 15 km in the same championships. Competitive cross-country skiing encompasses a variety of race formats and course lengths. Rules of cross-country skiing are sanctioned by the International Ski Federation and by various national organizations. International competitions include the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, the FIS Cross-Country World Cup, and at the Winter Olympic Games. Such races occur over homologated, groomed courses designed to support classic (in-track) and freestyle events, where the skiers may employ skate skiing. It also encompasses cross-country ski marathon events, sanctioned by the Worldloppet Ski Federation, and cross-country ski orienteering events, sanctioned by the International Orienteering Federation. 1970 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1970 took place 14–22 February 1970 in Vysoké Tatry, Czechoslovakia (present-day Slovakia). This was the second time this city hosted the event having done so in 1935. It was the first time an event was televised in colour from Czechoslovakia though broadcasting there remained in black and white.
