Contemporary art is the art of today, produced in the second half of the 20th century or in the 21st century. Fabien Fryns
Fabien Fryns is a Belgian art dealer and collector, residing in Beijing since 2004. He has worked in the art world since 1986, specializing in contemporary Chinese art since 2000. Early life Fryns grew up in Belgium, and from 1984 to 1988 he attended the prestigious Le Rosey School in Switzerland. He first started dealing and collecting art in 1986, and has been active in the art world ever since. Upon graduating from Le Rosey with an IB, he was the youngest student to enroll in the two year History of Art Course at Christie’s London (1988-1990), graduating with a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts. Thereafter, he graduated from the European Business School (EBS) in London in 1994 with a Bachelor in International Business degree. Caochangdi
Caochangdi () was an urban village and renowned arts district located in the Chaoyang District, Beijing, Chaoyang District of northeast Beijing at the intersection of the 5th Ring Road and Airport Expressway. Translated as "grasslands" in Mandarin, Caochangdi was home to a diverse group of residents, including migrant workers, farmers, students and artists, most notably, Ai Weiwei. Henry Hudson (artist)
Henry Hudson (born 1982, Bath) is a British artist who lives and works in London. He is best known for his use of Plasticine as his artistic medium in the creation of textured ‘paintings’. Hudson's most notable exhibition to date was ''The Rise and Fall of Young Sen – The Contemporary Artist’s Progress,'' which was shown at Sotheby's SI2 Gallery, London in May 2015. The exhibition consisted of ten large scale Plasticine paintings, depicting a contemporary version of William Hogarth's '' A'' ''Rake's Progress''. According to the New York Times, all ten paintings were sold prior to the show opening. Biography Hudson grew up in Yorkshire and attended Ampleforth College. Sheng Qi
Sheng Qi (; born 1965 in Hefei, Anhui Province, China) is a Chinese performance artist and painter. He was one of the original founders of the Chinese performance art group, Concept 21. Sheng Qi graduated from Beijing Academy of Art and Design in 1988. In 1989, in protest to the massacre at Tiananmen Square, he chopped off the little finger on his left hand and buried it in a porcelain flowerpot, which remained in Beijing during his subsequent exile in Europe. Sheng Qi graduated with an MFA at Central Saint Martins in 1998. In 1999 he returned to Beijing, but returned to London again in 2010, which is where he currently resides. Wu Junyong
Wu Junyong (; born 1978) is a Chinese artist born in Putian, a city in Fujian province, China. He graduated from The China Academy of Art were he studied in both the Prinmaking and New Media departments. He now lives and works in Hangzhou. His predominant medium is paintings done on paper and animated films, though in recent years he has become infatuated with doing graffiti on the body and impromptu tattoos. Biography Trained as a printmaker, Wu studied new media at the China Academy of Art (CAA). Now, he is an instructor at CAA. His work, particularly the ''Opera'' series (Opera I, II and III) are a satirical comment on politics. Although Wu has lived and worked most of his life in China, he stands behind his political commentary as truthful of politicians and politics worldwide. Zeng Fanzhi
Zeng Fanzhi (; born 1964) is a contemporary Chinese artist based in Beijing. Zeng's works have been praised as possessing an emotional directness, an intuitive psychological sense, and a carefully calibrated expressionistic technique. Born and raised in Wuhan, Zeng was interested primarily in painting and drawing from a young age, and did poorly in school. His earliest works are large-scale abstract paintings. Moving to Beijing in the early 1990s, Zeng's art became a response to this immersion in what he viewed as a more superficial environment, with his seminal ''Mask'' series displaying the tensions between the artist's dominant existential concerns and the pomposity and posturing of his new contemporary urban life (which is depicted ironically). Throughout, Zeng's expressionistic techniques run counter to such techniques' conventional usage. Julian Schnabel
Julian Schnabel (born October 26, 1951) is an American painter and filmmaker. In the 1980s, he received international attention for his "plate paintings" — with broken ceramic plates set onto large-scale paintings. Since the 1990s, he has been a proponent of independent arthouse cinema. Schnabel directed ''Before Night Falls'', which became Javier Bardem's breakthrough Academy Award-nominated role, and '' The Diving Bell and the Butterfly'', which was nominated for four Academy Awards. Jean-Michel Basquiat
Jean-Michel Basquiat (; December 22, 1960 – August 12, 1988) was an American artist who rose to success during the 1980s as part of the Neo-expressionism movement. Basquiat first achieved fame as part of the graffiti duo SAMO, alongside Al Diaz, writing enigmatic epigrams in the cultural hotbed of Manhattan's Lower East Side during the late 1970s, where rap, punk, and street art coalesced into early hip-hop music culture. By the early 1980s, his paintings were being exhibited in galleries and museums internationally. At 21, Basquiat became the youngest artist to ever take part in '' documenta'' in Kassel.
