Futsal has been played in Italy on an organised basis since 1987. Background The Associazione Italiana Football Sala (Italian Futsal Association / AIFS) was founded in 1987, and renamed the Federazione Italiana Football Sala (Italian Futsal Federation / FIFS) in 1988. . It was immediately recognized by FIFUSA (the international governing body of futsal, known by the Portuguese acronym Federação Internacional de Futebol de Salão). In 1988 it was among the founders of the European Union of Futsal (UEFS), the governing body in Europe. In 1991 it organized the World Championships in Milan. In the five years From 1992 to 1996, it organized the Mickey Mouse Trophy, sponsored by the Walt Disney. Futsal
Futsal is a football-based game played on a hard court smaller than a football pitch, and mainly indoors. It has similarities to five-a-side football and indoor football. Futsal is played between two teams of five players each, one of whom is the goalkeeper. Unlimited substitutions are permitted. Unlike some other forms of indoor soccer, it is played on a hard court surface marked by lines; walls or boards are not used. It is played with a smaller, harder, lower-bounce ball than football. The surface, ball and rules favour ball control and passing in small spaces. The game emphasizes control, improvisation, creativity and technique. Naming ''Futsal'' comes from the Portuguese ''futebol de salão'' and from the Spanish ''fútbol sala'' or ''fútbol de salón'' (all translatable as "indoor football"). The Italy national futsal team represents Italy in international futsal competitions such as the FIFA Futsal World Cup and the European Championships and is controlled by the Italian Football Federation. It is one of the strongest teams in Europe, champions in the 2003 UEFA Futsal Championship and UEFA Futsal Euro 2014.
