Edmund Bailey Funston
Edmund Bailey Funston (May 19, 1868 – May 10, 1933) was an American architect in Racine, Wisconsin. He is credited with designing the Badger Building (1916). He was the founder of Edmund B. Funston Company Architects. Funston was born in Champaign County, Illinois on May 19, 1868, to John H. Funston and Elizabeth E. (Bailey) Funston. Funston graduated in 1892 with a Bachelor of Science architecture degree from the University of Illinois. He taught in a manual training school in Colorado for two years before working in New Orleans and Atlanta. He worked as superintendent of construction at Jos. C. Llewellyn of Chicago for five years, including work on the construction of five buildings at the University of Illinois. He also superintended the rebuilding of the Advance Threshing Machine Company's building in Battle Creek, Michigan. Funston came to Racine and was associated with A. Farrell Funston was a Canadian Football League wide receiver for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for eight years. He won three Grey Cup titles with the team. CFL career After playing college football at Pacific University and being drafted by the National Football League without playing a down, Funston became a wide receiver for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1959 to 1966. For all those years, Ken Ploen was his quarterback. Together, they were major factors in Winnipeg's four Grey Cup appearances (1959, 1961, 1962, 1965), including three victories: 1959, 1961, 1962, and one loss: 1965. His highest totals as a receiver were the two years he was voted as a western conference all-star: 1961 (47 catches for 892 yards, 19.0 yards per catch, 8 touchdowns) and 1963 (60 catches for 835 yards, 13.9 yards per catch, 9 touchdowns). Frederick Funston
Frederick Funston (November 9, 1865 – February 19, 1917), also known as Fighting Fred Funston, was a general in the United States Army, best known for his roles in the Spanish–American War and the Philippine–American War. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Philippine–American War. Early life, education, and work Funston was born in 1865 in New Carlisle, Ohio, to Edward H. Funston and Anne Eliza ''Mitchell'' Funston. In 1867, his family moved to Allen County, Kansas. His father was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1884 and served five terms. Funston was a slight individual who stood tall and weighed only when he applied in 1886 to the United States Military Academy; he was rejected. Funston graduated from Iola High School in 1886. Grace "Gaye" Teresa Funston (1900-1984) was an Australian musician and, along with her sister Sella Funston, a member of the all-female dance band the Magpies Ladies Orchestra in 1913. Career Grace Funston's parents, Edward and Laura, were both amateur musicians and formed their own orchestra made up on their nine children. Grace Funston sang and played piano from an early age, later taking up cornet at the age of eight. In 1909 the Funston family moved to Melbourne from Sydney, and Grace began attending Sacred Heart Convent in Malvern. She played the cornet in a public concert for the first time the following year, and The Funston Family Orchestra began putting on regular charity concerts in the area, which would attracted an audience of passersby. Camp Funston is a U.S. Army training camp located on Fort Riley, southwest of Manhattan, Kansas. The camp was named for Brigadier General Frederick Funston (1865–1917). It is one of sixteen such camps established at the outbreak of World War I. History World War I Construction began during the summer of 1917 and eventually encompassed approximately 1,400 buildings on . The Camp Funston garrison was administered by the 164th Depot Brigade, commanders of which included George King Hunter.
