Funnel–mantle Locking Apparatus
The funnel–mantle locking apparatus is a structure found in many cephalopods that connects the mantle and hyponome (funnel) and restricts their movement relative to each other.Young, R.E., M. It consists of two interlocking components: one located on the mantle (often fibrous) and the other on the funnel (often cartilaginous). The apparatus may permit some anterior–posterior displacement or prevent movement altogether. Magnapinna Talismani
''Magnapinna talismani'' is a species of bigfin squid known only from a single damaged specimen. It is characterised by small white nodules present on the ventral surface of its fins. Description The holotype of ''M. talismani'' is a specimen of 61 mm mantle length (ML) collected in the northern Atlantic Ocean, south of the Azores, at . It was caught by an open bottom trawl at a depth of up to 3175 m. The capture location of this specimen is very near to that of the as-yet undescribed ''Magnapinna'' sp. B. Taxonomy ''M. talismani'' was originally placed in the genus ''Chiroteuthopsis'', which is now considered a junior synonym of ''Mastigoteuthis ''Mastigoteuthis'' is a genus of whip-lash squid containing at least seven valid species. Bigfin squids are a group of rarely seen cephalopods with a distinctive morphology. They are placed in the genus ''Magnapinna'' and family Magnapinnidae. Although the family is known only from larval, paralarval, and juvenile specimens, some authorities believe adult specimens have also been seen. Several videos have been taken of animals nicknamed the "long-arm squid", which appear to have a similar morphology. Since none of the seemingly adult specimens has ever been captured or sampled, it remains uncertain if they are of the same genus or only relatives. The arms and tentacles of the squid are both extremely long and believed to be long. These appendages are held perpendicular to the body, creating "elbows." How the squid feeds is yet to be discovered. Physical specimens The first record of this family comes from a specimen ('' Magnapinna talismani'') caught off the Azores in 1907.
