''Funkdafied'' is the debut album by American rapper Da Brat. It was released on June 28, 1994, and sold over one million copies, making her the first solo female rapper to go Platinum. Funkdafied debuted and peaked at number 11 on the Billboard 200, ''Billboard'' 200, and topped the Rap Charts and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album was preceded by the first single, "Funkdafied (song), Funkdafied", released on May 13, 1994. The single went Platinum in August and then the album went Platinum in January 1995. Funkdafied (song)
"Funkdafied" is the lead single released from Da Brat's Funkdafied, debut album of the same name. Background The song was both produced and written by Jermaine Dupri and contained a sample of the Isley Brothers 1983 hit "Between the Sheets (song), Between the Sheets", for which the brothers and Chris Jasper were given songwriting credits. "Funkdafied" also uses the rap from the intro of "Gimme the Funk," the 1982 release by Charades. Shawntae Harris-Dupart (born April 14, 1974), better known by her stage name Da Brat, is an American rapper. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, she began her career in 1992, the year she signed with So So Def Records. Her debut album ''Funkdafied'' (1994) sold one million copies, making her the first female solo rap act to receive a platinum certification, and the second overall female rap act (solo or group) after Salt-N-Pepa. "Fa All Y'all" is the second single released from Da Brat's debut album '' Funkdafied''. Background "Fa All Y'all" was the follow-up to Da Brat's successful debut single " Funkdafied" which charted at No. 6 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and reached platinum status during the summer of 1994. The single was released in September of that year, and although it did not match the success of "Funkdafied", the song nevertheless became Da Brat's second top 40 hit, reaching No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it spent 12 weeks. "Give It 2 You" is the third and final single released from Da Brat's debut album, '' Funkdafied'', the first album from a female rapper to go platinum. Background Produced by Jermaine Dupri and Manuel Seal, Jr., who used a sample of the Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long", "Give It 2 You" was the final single from Da Brat's platinum-certified album '' Funkdafied'' after " Funkdafied" (#6 US) and " Fa All Y'all" (#37 US). ''Anuthatantrum'' is the second studio album by Da Brat. It was released in 1996 and went Gold in 1997. A single culled from the album was "Ghetto Love", which featured TLC member Tionne Watkins. The album peaked at number 20 on the Billboard 200. Critical reception AllMusic writer Steve Huey called it "a slight improvement" over her debut record ''Funkdafied'', praising Dupri's beats for going into an "early-'80s urban funk direction" and Da Brat's lyricism being bereft of any "old-school quotes and obvious Snoop Dogg bites" and having more of a focused identity, concluding that, " 's another brief album, but ''Anuthatantrum'' does show Da Brat making subtle progress, and Dupri's production is inviting once again." So So Def Recordings is an American record label based in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, and owned by producer Jermaine Dupri, specializing in Southern hip hop, R&B and bass music. So So Def has managed artists such as Bow Wow, Kris Kross, TLC, and Usher. Beginnings So So Def was established in 1993 as a spin-off of Dupri's production company of the same moniker, through a joint venture with Sony and Columbia. Its first act was Xscape, whose debut album was released in the fall of the same year and went Platinum—as did their 2nd and 3rd albums, released in 1995 and 1998. In 1994, the label released the debut album of Da Brat, who became the 1st solo female emcee to be certified for Platinum album sales. Jermaine Dupri Mauldin (born September 23, 1972) is an American rapper, songwriter, record producer, record executive, entrepreneur, and DJ. Early life Jermaine Dupri Mauldin was born on September 23, 1972, the son of Tina (Mosley) and Michael Mauldin, a Columbia Records executive. Dupri's promising musical career began before he was even 10 years old. His father, also an Atlanta talent manager, had coordinated a Diana Ross show in 1982; to the delight of concert-goers, Dupri managed to get on-stage and dance along with Ross. Da Bush Babees is an American group of underground hip-hop artists loosely affiliated with the Native Tongues. The members of the group originally performed under the stage names Babe-B-Face Kaos (later Lee Majors), Mister Man (later King Khaliyl) and Y-Tee (later Light). The three grew up in Jamaica and Trinidad, where reggae strongly influenced their style. It was in 1992 in Brooklyn, New York, United States, where Mister Man first saw Kaos perform, that the group was formed. The two began collaborating, and after Mister Man suggested adding a reggae toaster, Y-Tee joined the group. Kris Kross was an American hip hop duo that consisted of Chris "Mac Daddy" Kelly and Chris "Daddy Mac" Smith. Kris Kross was the youngest hip-hop duo to gain success, with gold and platinum albums at 12 and 13 years old.
