Fuma Monou
, also written Fuuma Monou, is a fictional character created by the artists Clamp introduced in their manga series '' X''. Fuma appears to be an ordinary, young teenager who is friends with protagonist Kamui Shiro. However, his frequent encounters with Kamui and Kamui's divine power has made him develop a cold-blooded alter-ego, who joins the Dragons of Earth to eliminate mankind, preserve the Earth and kill Kamui's own group, the Dragons of Heaven. Fuma also appears in an animated film and television series based on the manga, both of which have a different outcome because Clamp did not finish the ''X'' manga. An alternative version of the character has appeared in the Clamp's manga, '' Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle'', as a rival of another Kamui. Clamp writer Nanase Ohkawa created Fuma knowing his fate as the Kamui of the Dragons of Earth, and her friends looked forward to the characterization. ''X'', also known as ''X/1999'', is a Japanese manga series created by Clamp, a creative team made up of Satsuki Igarashi, Nanase Ohkawa, Tsubaki Nekoi, and Mokona. It premiered in Kadokawa Shoten's ''Monthly Asuka'' ''shōjo'' manga magazine in May 1992 and ran there until it went on hiatus in March 2003; it has yet to be concluded. The story takes place at the end of days in the year 1999. The series follows Kamui Shiro, a young esper who returns home to Tokyo after a six-year absence to face his destiny as the one who will determine humanity's fate. Rintaro
is the pseudonym of , a well-known director of anime. He works frequently with the animation studio Madhouse (company), Madhouse (which he co-founded), though he is a freelance director not employed directly by any one studio. He began working in the animation industry—at age 17—as an in-between animator on the 1958 film ''Hakujaden''. His works have won and been nominated for multiple awards, including a nomination for Best Film (''Metropolis (2001 film), Metropolis'') at the 2001 Festival de Cine de Sitges. Rintaro is a fan of science fiction, and has been influenced by American Western (genre), westerns, gangster films, film noir, and French films. ''X'', also known as ''X/1999'' and ''X: The Movie'', is a 1996 Japanese anime film directed by Rintaro and animated by Madhouse. Rintaro wrote it alongside Clamp head writer Nanase Ohkawa. It is based on Clamp's manga of the same name. It premiered August 3, 1996, in Japan and had a limited screening in North America during 2000. The supernatural thriller focuses on the roles Kamui Shiro, Kotori Monou, and Fuma Monou play in the Apocalypse. After his mother's death, the young Kamui returns to Tokyo to participate in a Holy War between two groups that will either protect mankind or protect nature at the cost of mankind.
