Frith van der Merwe (born 26 May 1964) is a South African long-distance athlete. Running career She competed several times in the South African ultramarathon, the Comrades Marathon, in the late 1980s and early 1990s with success, setting female records for both up and down runs. Her 1989 record time of 5:54:43 in the down run was broken by Gerda Steyn in 2023. Her 1989 record time of 3:30:36 in the 56 km Two Oceans Marathon was broken by Gerda Steyn in 2022. Comrades Marathon
The Comrades Marathon is an ultramarathon of approximately which is run annually in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa between the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. It is the world's largest and oldest ultramarathon race. The direction of the race alternates each year between the "up" run (87 km) starting from Durban and the "down" run (now 90.184 km) starting from Pietermaritzburg. The 2019 field was capped at 25,000 runners, and the entry process closed after one week. South African runners constitute the greater part of the field, but many entrants hail from the United Kingdom, Zimbabwe, India, the United States, Brazil, Australia, Botswana, Russia and Eswatini. In all but three runnings since 1988, over 10,000 runners have reached the finish within the allowed 11 or 12 hours. Gerda Steyn
Gerda Steyn (born 3 March 1990) is a South African marathon and ultramarathon athlete. She set the Comrades Marathon down-run record in 2023 with a mark of 5:44:54, becoming the fourth woman under 6 hours for that race. On 11 April 2021, she became the SA marathon record holder with a time of 2:25:28 at the Xiamen Tuscany Camp Elite Marathon in Siena, Italy. Early life Her parents are Pieter and Trudie Steyn. Gerda grew up on a farm in the Bothaville area and completed her schooling in 2008 at the Bothaville High School. Afterwards, she qualified as a quantity surveyor from the University of the Free State. She has a sister, Estie, and a brother, Stefan.
