Friesenberg
Friesenberg was a quarter in the district 3 of Zürich. Geography Situated at the southern slope of the Uetliberg mountain, Friesenberg was formerly a part of Wiedikon municipality, which was incorporated into Zürich in 1893. Demographics The quarter has a population of 10,360 distributed on an area of 5.15 km². Jewish cemeteries On 5 July 1865 the Jewish community, which at that time numbered 30 members, mentioned the acquisition of a field for applying a cemetery. On 31 May 1866 the Unterer Friesenberg cemetery was inaugurated on occasion of the first funeral of a Jewish woman in Zürich. In 1892 a cemetery hall was built, and after several expansions, a large second site was bought in 1916. Since the installation of the second cemetery in 1952, fewer and fewer burials were done at the very first Jewish cemetery in Zürich since the 14th century. Zürich Friesenberg (german: Zürich Friesenberg) is a railway station in the west of the Swiss city of Zürich, in the city's Friesenberg quarter. The station is on the Uetliberg line, which is operated by the Sihltal Zürich Uetliberg Bahn (SZU). The station is served by the following passenger trains: The station has a single track and a single platform, although the line widens into a two track dynamic passing loop on the opposite side of the level crossing on the downhill side of the station. Erwin Leiser
Erwin Leiser (May 16, 1923 – August 22, 1996) was a German-born Jew and director, writer, and actor. Born and raised in Berlin, he fled to Sweden at the age of 15 to escape the Nazi Party. He graduated from the University of Lund and worked as a journalist and a drama and literary critic. He is best known for his 1960 documentary film ''Mein Kampf'', based on Nazi footage from secret archives and depicting Nazi atrocities. He subsequently made other documentaries both on Nazi Germany and other topics. Kurt Hirschfeld (born 10 March 1902 in Lehrte, Germany; died 8 November 1964 in Zurich) was a German theater director and dramaturg in Zurich. Life and career Kurt Hirschfeld was born on 10 March 1902 in Lehrte, Lower Saxony, Germany to the Jewish merchant Hermann Hirschfeld (1871–1941) and his wife Selma Zierl (1877–1926), the daughter of a rabbi. After completing primary school in Lehrte, Hirschfeld transferred in 1914 to the Realgymnasium on Aegidientorplatz in Hannover, where he composed poetry and essays. He studied philosophy, sociology, German, and art history in Heidelberg, Frankfurt am Main, and Göttingen. Beginning in 1930, he worked as a dramaturg at the Hessischen Landestheater Darmstadt. Felix Salten
Felix Salten (; 6 September 1869 – 8 October 1945) was an Austro-Hungarian author and literary critic in Vienna. Life and death Salten was born Siegmund Salzmann on 6 September 1869 in Pest, Austria-Hungary. His father was Fülöp Salzmann, the telegraph office's clerk in Pest; his mother was Maria Singer. He was the grandson of an Orthodox rabbi. When he was four weeks old, his family relocated to Vienna, Austria, as many Jews did after the Imperial government had granted full citizenship rights to Jews in 1867. When his father went bankrupt, the sixteen-year-old Salten quit school and began working for an insurance agency. He also began submitting poems and book reviews to journals. Sigi Feigel
Sigi Feigel (17 May 1921 – 28 August 2004) was a Swiss attorney, President and Honorary President of the Israelitische Cultusgemeinde Zürich (ICZ), and notable for his campaigns against antisemitism and racism. Life and work Feigel was born in Zürich to Russian Jewish immigrants. He received his PhD in jurisprudence at the University of Zürich in 1949. From 1949 to 1977, he was the director of the textile factory inherited by his wife, Evi Heim. The firm was sold in 1977, and from 1983, Feigel worked as an attorney. Feigel was President of the Israelitische Cultusgemeinde Zürich (ICZ), Switzerland's biggest Jewish Community, from 1972 till 1987, and then became its Honorary President. Mascha Kaléko (born Golda Malka Aufen; 7 June 1907 – 21 January 1975) was a German language, German-language poet. Biography Kaléko was born Golda Malka Aufen in Chrzanów, Galicia (Central Europe), Galicia (now Poland). She was the daughter of Fischel Engel, a merchant, and Rozalia Chaja Reisel Aufen, both of Jewish descent. With the commencement of World War I, her mother moved with her and her sister Lea to Germany; first to Frankfurt, then to Marburg, and in 1918 to Berlin where her parents married in 1922. In 1928, she married the Hebrew teacher Saul Aaron Kaléko. From 1929 on, she published poetry presenting the daily life of the common people in newspapers such as ''Vossische Zeitung'' and ''Berliner Tageblatt''. In her poetry, Kaléko captured the atmosphere of Berlin in the 1930s. Joseph Schmidt
Joseph Schmidt (4 March 1904 – 16 November 1942) was an Austro-Hungarian and Romanian Jewish tenor and actor. Life and career Schmidt was born in Davideny (Ukrainian: '' Davydivka'') village in the Storozhynets district of the Bukovina province of Austria-Hungary, which became part of Romania after World War I and is now part of Ukraine. In addition to German, which was his first language, and Yiddish, he learned Hebrew and became fluent in Romanian, French and English. His first vocal training was as a boy alto in the Czernowitz Synagogue. His talents were quickly recognised and by 1924 he was featured in his first solo recital in Czernowitz singing traditional Jewish songs and arias by Verdi, Puccini, Rossini and Bizet.
