The Torres Strait Islands are a group of at least 274 small islands in the Torres Strait between Queensland, Australia and Papua New Guinea. This is a list of the named islands and island groups in the Torres Strait. In addition there are unnamed islands and named and unnamed rocks. Almost all of the islands in the Torres Strait are part of Australia; consequently all entries in this table are in Australia unless noted as being in Papua New Guinea. Bramble Cay
Bramble Cay, also known as Maizab Kaur (also spelt Maizub Kaur) and Massaramcoer, is a small cay located at the northeastern edge of Australia and the Torres Strait Islands of Queensland and at the northern end of the Great Barrier Reef. Lying around north of Erub Island in the Gulf of Papua, it is the northernmost point of land of Australia and marks the end of the Great Barrier Reef. It is of interest for its geomorphology, human history and flora and fauna. It is an important nesting site for green turtles and several species of seabird, and is notably the site of the first extinction of a mammal species due to anthropogenic climate change, the Bramble Cay melomys. There is an automated lighthouse on the island. Mabuiag Island
Mabuiag, also known as "Mabuyag" and natively "Mabuyaagi", formerly "Jervis Island") is one of the Torres Strait Islands in Queensland, Australia. Mabuiag is also a town and locality in the Torres Strait Island Region local government area. In the , Mabuiag Island had a population of 210 people. Geography The island is in the Bellevue Islands group, north of Thursday Island in the Napoleon Passage and Arnolds Passage of the Torres Strait. It has other traditional names as well, such as Gœmu (strictly speaking the name of the South-East part of Mabuiag). This island is one of the Torres Strait Islands, originally named by Captain William Bligh, "Jervis Island", and so labelled on early English language maps. Horn Island, Queensland
Horn Island, or ''Ngurupai/Narupai'' (pronounced ''Nœrupai/Nurupai'') in the local language, is an island of the Torres Strait Islands archipelago located in the Torres Strait, in Queensland in Northern Australia between the Australian mainland and Papua New Guinea. It is within the locality of Horn within the Shire of Torres. The town of Wasaga is on the north-western coast of the island (). In the , the locality of Horn had a population of 531 people. Keriri Island
Keriri Island is a rural locality in the Torres Strait Island Region, Queensland, Australia. It consists only of the island Hammond Island whose only town is also called Hammond Island .In the , Keriri Island had a population of 268 people. Geography Hammond Island is the town on the east coast of the island (). Bruce Point is a headland just south of the town (). There are boat launching facilities there. History Keriri Island was named as a locality on 2 July 2010. Hammond Island was probably named after naval office Sir Andrew Snape Hamond by Captain Edward Edwards on September 1791 while travelling to Timor in the boats after the wreck of HMS Pandora. Hammond Island, Queensland
Hammond Island (Indigenous name: Keriri or Kiriri) is an island with a town of the same name, in the Torres Strait, Queensland, Australia. It is the only island within the locality of Keriri Island within the local government area of Torres Strait Island Region. History of Hammond Island The Kaurareg people know Hammond Island as Keriri and are believed to have occupied this area prior to first contact with Europeans. Hammond Island is located in the Southern or Prince of Wales Island group of the Torres Strait. Halfway Island (Queensland)
Halfway Island is an island of the Torres Strait Islands archipelago located approximately northeast of Thursday Island in the Cumberland Passage of Torres Strait, Queensland, Australia. Wrecked on a reef between Murray and Halfway Islands north-east of Cape York, May 1829. Gabba Island (Queensland)
Gebar is an uninhabited island in the Torres Strait in the Australian state of Queensland. The first recorded sighting by Europeans was by the Spanish expedition of Luís Vaez de Torres on 10 September 1606. It was recorded again by Bligh on 11 September 1792 as 'an island with two hills' and given the name The Brothers. Subsequently, it has been known as Brothers Hills or Two Brothers, while the anglicisation 'Gabba' is frequently seen on historical maps. The traditional owners of Gebar are the Gebaralgal who today reside on Yam Island, to the southeast. On 13 December 2004, their native title claim over Gebar was determined in the Federal Court of Australia. The Duncan Islands are a group of islands in the Torres Strait Islands archipelago, northwest of the Bramble Channel of Torres Strait in Queensland, Australia. Deliverance Island (Queensland)
Warul Kawa Indigenous Protected Area (also known as Deliverance Island) is a small island that is part of Australia's National Reserve System, located south of Papua New Guinea and about north of Thursday Island, Torres Strait. The protected area and island are the most north westerly of the Torres Strait Islands located in the water of Torres Strait, part of Queensland in Australia, and from Indonesia, at the border of Papua province. Geology It is a sand cay surrounded by a shallow reef platform interspersed with sandy patches, with little live coral present. Brown and green algae are predominating on the rocky substrate with some seagrass present. The island and surrounding reef support two internationally significant populations of sea turtles.
