Freshwater Bay Independent Lifeboat Station
Freshwater Lifeboat Station is owned and operated by the Freshwater Independent Lifeboat Service located in the village of Freshwater on the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom.OS Explorer Map OL29 - Isle of Wight, Folded Map. Freshwater is a large village and civil parishes in England, civil parish at the western end of the Isle of Wight, England. The southern, coastal part of the village is Freshwater Bay, named for the adjacent small cove. Freshwater sits at the western end of the region known as the Back of the Wight or the West Wight, a popular tourist area. Freshwater is close to steep Chalk Formation, chalk cliffs. Royal National Lifeboat Institution
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is the largest charity that saves lives at sea around the coasts of the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man, as well as on some inland waterways. It is one of Independent lifeboats in Britain and Ireland, several lifeboat services operating in the same area. Independent lifeboat services in Britain and Ireland began to be established around the coasts towards the end of the 18th century in response to the loss of life at sea. More recently, independent services have been set up in response to the increasing popularity of coastal and river sport and leisure activities. There are at least 80 (see tables below) and as many as 100 independent lifeboat services operating throughout Britain and Ireland, both on coasts and inland waterways. This means that around a quarter of the UK and Ireland's lifeboat services are non RNLI.
