French Cruiser Suffren
''Suffren'' was the first vessel of the second group of 8-inch gunned, 10,000 ton Treaty Cruisers built for ''La Marine Nationale''. She spent the interwar period with the two ''Duquesne''-class cruisers until she was sent to French Indochina. Upon her return to the Mediterranean she rejoined the ''Duquesne''s at Alexandria. She was interned there with the other units of the French Navy. She returned to the War in 1943 spending her time based at Dakar on blockade patrol. Post war she aided in the return of the French to Indochina until placed in reserve in 1947. In reserve she was used as a training hulk and barracks ship at Brest. She was renamed ''Océan'' in 1963 and finally stricken in 1972. She was named in honour of Admiral Pierre André de Suffren de Saint Tropez (1729 - 1788) considered by many historians to be the French version of Admiral Horatio Nelson. He was part of Admiral D'Estang's squadron off North America and the West Indies during 1778 and 1779. The area of his ... Loire-Nieuport 130
The Loire 130 was a French flying boat that saw service during World War II. It was designed and built by Loire Aviation of St Nazaire. Development The Loire 130 originated from a mid-1930s requirement from the French Navy for a reconnaissance seaplane or flying boat that could also serve aboard French battleships and cruisers. Chosen in 1936 against five competitors ( Bréguet 610, Gourdou-Leseurre GL-820 HY, Levasseur PL.200, Potez CAMS 120), the Loire 130's performance was deemed to be good and production orders for 150 of the machines were placed. It entered production in 1937 and replaced most shipborne seaplanes and flying boats already in service. Operational service In the late 1930s, Loire 130s were serving aboard most battleships and cruisers of the French Navy, as well as aboard the seaplane tender ''Commandant Teste''. Although appearing quite obsolete and having very marginal performance for their time, quite a few Loire 130s survived the war and remained in post-wa ... The French squadron consisted of the battleship , four cruisers (, , and ), three destroyers (, , ) and a submarine (). The French emptied their fuel bunkers and removed the firing mechanisms from their guns. Cunningham promised to repatriate the ships' crews.
