Frei Family
The Frei family of Chile is formed by the descendants of Swiss Eduardo Frei Schlinz and Chilean Victoria Montalva Martínez. It became politically influential during the 20th century, and has played and still plays a significant role in Chilean politics. Its most prominent members are: * Eduardo Frei Montalva (1911–1982), President of Chile 1964-1970, his wife María Ruiz-Tagle Jiménez, and their children Irene, Carmen, Isabel Margarita, Mónica, Eduardo, Jorge and Francisco Javier Frei Ruiz-Tagle. Chile, officially the Republic of Chile, is a country in the western part of South America. It is the southernmost country in the world, and the closest to Antarctica, occupying a long and narrow strip of land between the Andes to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Eduardo Frei Montalva
Eduardo Nicanor Frei Montalva (; 16 January 1911 – 22 January 1982) was a Chilean political leader. In his long political career, he was Minister of Public Works, president of his Christian Democratic Party, senator, President of the Senate, and the 27th president of Chile from 1964 to 1970. His eldest son, Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, also became president of Chile (1994–2000). Frei's Christian Democratic Party supported the Armed Forces intervention to remove his successor Salvador Allende from office in 1973, after the Chamber of Deputies, on 22 August 1973, accused Allende of violating the Constitution. He was later a vocal opponent of the Augusto Pinochet regime. On 22 January 1982, Frei died in Santiago, Chile, following surgery. Assassination was suspected by some but has never been proven. Carmen Frei
Carmen Frei Ruiz–Tagle (born June 22, 1938) is a Chilean politician and teacher. She served as Senator from 1990 to 2006. Frei was born in Santiago, the eldest child to Eduardo Frei Montalva and María Ruiz-Tagle. She studied at the ''Colegio Universitario Inglés''; and later graduated as a teacher (specializing in infants) from the Universidad de Chile. She became a councilwoman for Santiago in 1970, and was elected Senator for Antofagasta in 1990, being reelected in 1998. She lost the position in 2006. She was married to Eugenio Ortega and has 3 children. Eduardo Alfredo Juan Bernardo Frei Ruiz–Tagle (; born 24 June 1942) is a Chilean politician and civil engineer who served as president of Chile from 1994 to 2000. He was also a Senator, fulfilling the role of President of the Senate from 2006 to 2008. He attempted a comeback as the candidate of the ruling Concertación coalition for the 2009 presidential election, but was narrowly defeated. Marta Larraechea Bolívar (born August 30, 1944 in Constitución, Talca Province) is a social orientator, politician and wife of Chilean President Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle. She was a council member of the Santiago municipality (2000–2004) and First Lady of Chile (1994–2000). She is of Basque descent. She is the daughter of Vasco de Larraechea Herrera and Victoria Bolívar Le Fort. She studied as a child at "Inmaculada Concepción" school in Concepción, Secretaryship and Social Orientation at Instituto Carlos Casanueva. History Of Chile
The territory of Chile has been populated since at least 3000 BC. By the 16th century, Spanish conquistadors began to colonize the region of present-day Chile, and the territory was a colony between 1540 and 1818, when it gained independence from Spain. The country's economic development was successively marked by the export of first agricultural produce, then saltpeter and later copper. The wealth of raw materials led to an economic upturn, but also led to dependency, and even wars with neighboring states.
