Freedom Party (Armenia)
Freedom Party ( hy, Ազատություն կուսակցություն, translit=Azatut’yun kusakts’ut’yun) is an Armenian political party. It was founded on 29 May 1997 and is currently led by former Prime Minister of Armenia Hrant Bagratyan. History The Freedom Party was founded in May 1997 by Hrant Bagratyan, who served as Prime Minister of Armenia between 1993 and 1996. Bagratyan was a member of the Armenian National Congress. The party participated in the 1999 Armenian parliamentary election, winning 1.02% of the vote. The party participated in the 2012 Armenian parliamentary election under the Armenian National Congress bloc and Bagratyan was elected as the only MP from his party. On 24 December 2012, Hrant Bagratyan was nominated to participate in the 2013 Armenian presidential election during a party congress held in Yerevan. Free Democrats (Armenia)
Free Democrats ( hy, Ազատ դեմոկրատներ, translit=Azat demokratner) is an Armenian liberal, Pro-European political party. It was founded in 2011 by Khachatur Kokobelyan. History Some Free Democrats party members participated in the 2012 Armenian parliamentary election under the Heritage Party list. Following the election, Heritage won 5.78% of the vote. The party participated in the 2017 Armenian parliamentary election, however the party won just 0.94% of the vote, failing to win any political representation. Khachatur Kokobelyan headed the party list, while Hrant Bagratyan (former Prime Minister of Armenia and leader of the Freedom Party) was the candidate for the post of Prime Minister. 2017 Armenian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Armenia on 2 April 2017. They were the first elections after a constitutional referendum in 2015 that approved reforms for the country to become a parliamentary republic. The result was a victory for the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, which won 58 of the 105 seats in the National Assembly. Electoral system At the time of the previous elections in 2012, the National Assembly had 131 seats, of which 41 were elected in single-member constituencies by first-past-the-post voting and 90 by proportional representation in a single nationwide constituency with an electoral threshold of 5%. However, a referendum in December 2015 approved constitutional amendments reducing the minimum number of seats in the National Assembly to 101, all of which will be elected by party-list proportional representation, with seats allocated using the d'Hondt method and an election threshold of 5% for parties and 7% for multi-party alliances. 2021 Armenian Parliamentary Election
Snap parliamentary elections were held in Armenia on 20 June 2021. The elections had initially been scheduled for 9 December 2023, but were called earlier due to a political crisis following the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War and an alleged attempted coup in February 2021. Nikol Pashinyan, who had served as Prime Minister since 2018, resigned in April 2021 and subsequently the seventh National Assembly was dissolved on 10 May. Pashinyan continued to serve as acting prime minister until the elections were held. Following the election, Pashinyan's Civil Contract party received 54% of the vote and won 71 seats, a majority in the 107-seat parliament. The opposition Armenia Alliance, finished second with 29 seats, while the I Have Honor Alliance won 7 seats. No other party or alliance surpassed the electoral threshold required to win a seat. 2013 Armenian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Armenia on 18 February 2013. In the run-up to the elections, Armenia's first President Levon Ter-Petrosyan and Gagik Tsarukyan, leader of the second largest Parliamentary group, parliamentary party Prosperous Armenia, withdrew from the race in December 2012. Many believed that no candidate would be able to challenge incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan, others stated that people see "absence of alternatives" and these factors caused great apathy among the public.
