Fredrika Stenhammar
Fredrika Stenhammar (née Andrée; 19 September 1836 in Visby – 7 October 1880) was a Swedish opera singer (soprano). She was born as Fredrika Andrée to doctor Andreas Andrée and was sister of Sweden's first female organist, Elfrida Andrée. She was a student at the Conservatory in Leipzig in 1851–54, was employed at the '' Hofoper'' in Dessau in 185-55, and at the Royal Swedish Opera in 1855–57. She was a student of Gilbert Duprez in 1857–58 and sang at the opera in Vienna in 1859. When she returned to Sweden she became a prima donna and a singing instructor of the Royal Swedish Opera. Maria Röhl
Maria Christina Röhl (26 July 1801 – 5 July 1875) was a Swedish portrait artist. She made portraits of many of the best known people in Sweden in the first half of the 19th century. Her paintings are exhibited at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. The Swedish Royal library has a collection of 1800 portraits by her. She was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts (1843) and an official portrait artist of the royal court. Biography Maria Röhl was born in Stockholm in a well-off family. She was the daughter of the consul Jacob Röhl and Maria Christina Kierrman and sister of educator Gustafva Röhl (1798–1848). After the death of their parents in 1822, she first worked as a governess. Visby () is an urban area in Sweden and the seat of Gotland Municipality in Gotland County on the island of Gotland with 24,330 inhabitants . Visby is also the episcopal see for the Diocese of Visby. Elfrida Andrée
Elfrida Andrée (19 February 1841 – 11 January 1929), was a Swedish organist, composer, and conductor. A 1996 recording on the Caprice label features Andrée's piano quintet, along with a piano sonata, the string quartet in D minor, and vocal music. She was a sister of Swedish opera singer-soprano Fredrika Stenhammar. Life and career Andrée was born in Visby to the doctor Andreas Andrée. She was the pupil of Ludvig Norman and Niels Wilhelm Gade. Her sister was the singer Fredrika Stenhammar. An activist in the Swedish women's movement, she was one of the first female organists to be officially appointed in Scandinavia. She began work in Stockholm in 1861 and became the organist at Gothenburg Cathedral in 1867. In 1897 she was named leader of the Gothenburg Workers Institute Concerts, establishing her reputation as the first Swedish woman to conduct a symphony orchestra. Dessau
Dessau is a town and former municipality in Germany at the confluence of the rivers Mulde and Elbe, in the '' Bundesland'' (Federal State) of Saxony-Anhalt. Since 1 July 2007, it has been part of the newly created municipality of Dessau-Roßlau. Population of Dessau proper: 67,747 (Dec. 2020). Geography Dessau is situated on a floodplain where the Mulde flows into the Elbe. This causes yearly floods. Gilbert Duprez
Gilbert-Louis Duprez (6 December 180623 September 1896) was a French tenor, singing teacher and minor composer who famously pioneered the delivery of the operatic high C from the chest (''Ut de poitrine'', as Paris audiences called it). He also created the role of Edgardo in the popular bel canto-era opera ''Lucia di Lammermoor'' in 1835. Biography Gilbert-Louis Duprez was born in Paris. He studied singing, music theory, and composition with Alexandre-Étienne Choron and made his operatic début at the Odéon in 1825 as ''Count Almaviva'' in Rossini's ''Il barbiere di Siviglia''. He worked in that theatre without much success until 1828, when he decided to try his luck in Italy. There, the operatic scene was more active and developed. The Royal Swedish Academy of Music ( sv, Kungliga Musikaliska Akademien), founded in 1771 by King Gustav III, is one of the Royal Academies in Sweden. At the time of its foundation, only one of its co-founder was a professional musician, Ferdinand Zellbell the Younger. The Academy is an independent organization, which acts to promote the artistic, scientific, educational and cultural development of music. Fredrik Wetterqvist is director of the Academy. The Academy consists of 170 Swedish members belonging to various spheres of the music industry and has a research committee which has been operational since 1980s.
