Frederick V. McNair, Jr.
Frederick Vallette McNair Jr. (March 13, 1882 – September 2, 1962) was an officer of the United States Navy and a recipient of the Medal of Honor for his actions at the beginning of the U.S. occupation of Veracruz, Mexico. McNair was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy (Class of 1903), the son of Rear Admiral Frederick V. McNair (Class of 1857), the grandfather of tennis star Frederick V. McNair, IV and poet-novelist Lailee McNair. McNair rose to the rank of captain. He is buried in the United States Naval Academy Cemetery and his grave can be located in lot 406. Medal of Honor citation McNair's Medal of Honor citation reads: For distinguished conduct in battle engagement of Vera Cruz, 22 April 1914. Lt. Lailee Inez Bakhtiar (née McNair, formerly van Dillen; born June 10, 1951), is an American poet and novelist. Published in 2021, ''Esther Entering Your Destiny'' is the author's new non-fiction book about the historical and Biblical figure of ''Esther'' of the Old Testament ''Book of Esther''. This analysis of Esther from the Bible describes her courage, influence, and spiritual role in ancient times. The United States Naval Academy (USNA) is an undergraduate college in Annapolis, Maryland with the mission of educating and commissioning officers for the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The United States occupation of the Mexican port of Veracruz lasted for seven months in 1914 and occurred in the midst of poor diplomatic relations between Mexico and the United States, related to the ongoing Mexican Revolution. In response to the Tampico Affair, President Woodrow Wilson ordered the U.S. Navy to prepare for the occupation of the port of Veracruz. While waiting for authorization of Congress to carry out such action, Wilson was alerted to a German delivery of weapons for Victoriano Huerta due to arrive to the port on April 21. As a result, Wilson issued an immediate order to seize the port's customs office and confiscate the weaponry. The Medal of Honor was created during the American Civil War and is the highest military decoration presented by the United States government to a member of its armed forces. Frederick V. McNair IV (born July 22, 1950) is an American former professional tennis player who reached the world No. 1 doubles ranking in 1976. That year, he teamed up with Sherwood Stewart to capture the men's doubles titles at French Open, the German Open and the Masters. McNair was also a mixed doubles runner-up at the French Open in 1981, partnering Betty Stöve. In 1978, he was a member of the U.S. team that won the Davis Cup. In nine years on the professional tour, McNair won 16 doubles titles. His career-high singles ranking was world No. 67. The United States Naval Academy Cemetery and Columbarium is a cemetery at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. History In 1868 the Naval Academy purchased a 67-acre piece of land called Strawberry Hill as part of their efforts to expand after the American Civil War. Within a year of its acquisition part of the property became the cemetery. Since its beginning the cemetery has become the final resting place for Medal of Honor recipients, Superintendents of the Naval Academy, Midshipmen, and former employees of the Academy and hundreds more of the nation's veterans. The cemetery is also home to monuments that do not mark remains, but commemorate the heroism of individuals who gave their life in service to their country.
