Fred Turner (footballer)
Frederick Arthur Turner (28 February 1930 – 9 July 1955) was an English footballer who played at right back for Southampton in the 1950s, before his death from Stomach Cancer. Career Turner was born in Southampton, the son of Mr. W. Turner, a Southampton Football Club director. After playing local league football, he joined the "Saints" as an amateur in July 1948, signing professional papers in February 1950. Although he played regularly for the reserve team, including in the semi-final of the Combination Cup in 1950. In 1951, he was called up to do his National Service in Devon. During his period in the Army, he was loaned to Torquay United, but only made one appearance before he was demobbed, returning to Southampton in March 1953. On his return to The Dell, Turner played regularly in the reserves, scoring the occasional goal, and developed into an outstanding full-back. Frederick Jackson Turner
Frederick Jackson Turner (November 14, 1861 – March 14, 1932) was an American historian during the early 20th century, based at the University of Wisconsin until 1910, and then Harvard University. He was known primarily for his frontier thesis. He trained many PhDs who became well-known historians. He promoted interdisciplinary and quantitative methods, often with an emphasis on the Midwest. His best known publication is his essay "The Significance of the Frontier in American History," the ideas of which formed the frontier thesis. He argued that the moving western frontier exerted a strong influence on American democracy and the American character from the colonial era until 1890. He is also known for his theories of geographical sectionalism. During recent years historians and academics have argued frequently over Turner's work; however, all agree that the frontier thesis has had an enormous effect on historical scholarship. Frederick Turner (27 October 1910 – 2001) was an English Jesuit priest, archivist, librarian and headmaster at Stonyhurst College. Birth Frederick Joseph Turner was born on 27 October 1910 at Lytham St Annes, Lancashire of recusant stock, the only son of Joseph William Turner, a successful solicitor. An earlier member of his family had been Bishop William Turner, the first Bishop of Salford (1851-1872). Education After his schooling at Stonyhurst College, Turner went to University College, Oxford, in 1929, and secured first-class honours in Mods and Greats. He entered the Jesuit novitiate at Manresa House, Roehampton, in 1932 and, after taking first vows in 1934, was sent to study philosophy at the Gregorian University in Rome, where the regime allowed only one bath a year and where his health quickly deteriorated. Frederick Turner (born 1943) is an English–American poet affiliated with the literary movement known as New Formalism. He is the author of two full-length science fiction epic poems, ''The New World'' and ''Genesis''; several books of his poetry and literary translations; and a number of other works. He has been called "a major poet of our time". Early life and education Born in Northamptonshire, England, Turner is the son of Scottish cultural anthropologist Victor Witter Turner and English anthropologist Edith Turner. He had four siblings. His brothers include scientist Robert Turner and anthropologist Rory Turner, who teaches at Goucher College in Towson, Maryland. Fred Turner (born April 4, 1961) is an American academic. He is the Harry and Norman Chandler Professor of Communication at Stanford University, having formerly served as department chair. Before joining Stanford as an associate professor, Turner taught Communication at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He earned a B.A. in English and American Literature from Brown University, an M.A. in English from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of California, San Diego. In 2015, he was appointed as Harry and Norman Chandler Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at Stanford. Fred Turner (musician)
Charles Frederick Turner (born October 16, 1943) is a Canadian rock bassist, vocalist and songwriter, and was a founding member of the 1970s rock band Bachman–Turner Overdrive (B.T.O.). He is credited on most B.T.O. albums as "C.F. Turner". History Fred Turner played in over a dozen bands in and around Winnipeg during his early adult years, his first vocal recordings being with the group Pink Plumm, which released one independent single titled "Along Came Pride". Based upon advice Randy Bachman received from Neil Young, Turner was subsequently asked to join Randy's band Brave Belt in 1971. At the time, Turner was playing and singing in a cover band called the D-Drifters. The D-Drifters wanted to continue doing cover songs, and had repeatedly rejected Turner's original compositions.
